Here's a random thought.

Can you split a gear pick, and keep one of the resulting lower caliber picks in reserve?

I would allow it, but that's just opinion...

As a reserve pick has no inherit caliber - the pick you get is only determined by your gear check, how many AD you spend and the current mission caliber - I would not allow it.

No. You can use a Caliber III pick to get two Caliber I pieces of gear, not two caliber I picks.

Yeah, that was my strict interpretation too. But I thought it might be fair to allow it because if you are on a cal V mission, it seems a waste to bank a pick when you know you will only typically be able to get a cal I or II pick out of it.

True, but since you can get two caliber III picks with your caliber V pick during the intel phase instead of making it a reserve pick, you'll be far more likely to bring along what you would want to request with the reserve pick later on anyway.

Well, it says you can't make request checks for stuff greater than mission caliber, so theoretically you could say that the lowered caliber of the split pick is the effective mission caliber for request checks using it. However, request checks are slanted towards the lower calibers anyway, so it might be a bit too powerful still.

I wouldn't allow it (but I'd be tempted). Let's say you did break a caliber V into 2 IIIs. You buy one piece of gear and then reserve the other. When you're in the field, you use the reserve pick and buy a caliber V pick (since as stated, reserve picks have no caliber). Now you've gotten your original cal V AND a bonus III. That's breaking the system.

Can't do that. You can only acquire calibers up to 4 in the field.

That said, I never realized that as-is, there wasn't a cap on the reserve pick to the caliber you put in. Easy enough to house rule.  Cool
