An easy explanation for the dose, as long as you don't go Large, would be the blast from that overloaded Mr. Handy core.

I'm actually looking at Corn-Fed for Largeishness, and Test-Subject for DR or some other handy but not obvious mutation that he's had from the cradle. The point is that he's a human pack-mule. Lenny without Steinbeck's mawkishness.

And being a big oaf Tough Hero garbage burner allows me to explain away my never-played-the-video-game ignorance of the world.  Smiley

I know Antilles fronted a "strong melee type", and have no fear. I won't step on your toes. There'll be no training or skill in how my character approaches combat. He's a boulder, not a sword.

She's taking Gorgeous for a reason.

*EDIT* Incidentally, build the characters, but don't be too set on what job you'll be doing. You don't get to pick that - the GOAT picks it for you. That doesn't stop you having hobbies and aspirations of course, and it doesn't stop you being awful at your job and shirking your responsibilities...

It all came together just in time for the Mr. Handy incident...

How does this GOAT thing work for people without the game?  I see some questions on the Fallout wiki--is that where I should head for that sort of thing?

It came about in Fallout 3 as a way for you to pick your Tag skills.  They changed tagging, so rather than 2 for one skill points on your Tagged skills, you got 15 extra skill points.

In universe the GOAT would establish where you worked in the Vault before we head off on our adventure.

You'll receive a nice little in-character questionairre. Which will determine your occupation for the rest of your natural life.

What about our unnatural lives as ex-vault dwellers and such?  (Assuming we don't end up as ghouls, super mutants, plant food, or robobrains.)

Oh, so this is something you're going to generate, Glim? We're not expected to direct our attention to some kind of fansite or something?

Not sure how you are setting this up, but are we going to be young characters having just taken the GOAT, or can we be older characters who took the GOAT years ago?

In the latter case, may I defer picking my specialty until after I take the GOAT?  My assigned occupuation could go a long ways towards picking that.

Right now I am looking at Ambitious <Specialty> Dedicated Hero.

<Specialty> would be based on how long I had been at my current profession.

If we get a vote, I vote for playing twentysomethings.

You'll take the GOAT in-character at age 16 as a prequel to the story. Once that's done we'll wind it forward 3 years to age 19 and kick off the game, when you'll have been in your main job  for 3 years.

Remember, you get your first job aged 10 when you get your Pip-Boy, so you'll already have 6 years experience at a job when you do the GOAT. You may wind up with a job that you don't want and don't have any skills for. Don't let the propect of your jpb affect your Speciality.

Your Speciality should reflect what you want to be, not what you are.

Does that clear it up?
