My temptation would be to mostly rip of Star Wars and add a bit of Lovecraftian mythos.

Nice. I'll probably do a Traveller TNE:1248 conversion. I've already run a prototype with Spycraft that worked very well (esp running Starship combat as a Chase Dramatic Conflict).

I should be honest, it was the4 discussion of ftl communication, not the MC space opera bit. My Macross game notes are all for Mekton fuZion.

If I was going to use SC/MC, something without giant robots or aliens...

I did a Starship Combat DC several years ago, mostly looting from Star Trek.

I think it's clunky, but my friend liked it when he got into space combat.
