I honestly don't get the fan rage at the new Trek.

My parents are massive trekkies. They fought to keep it on the air in the sixties. They didn't go out on Fridays (or whenever) until after the show was over. The loved TOS, TNG, DS9 (which always felt like it was copying what B5 did the season before), Voyager (bleh), and Enterprise (double bleh). They hate Braga (I think... the producer who publicly said he hated Gene's vision of the future and the show) with a passion.

They also loved the movie.

I honestly don't get the fan whining over it.

I loved the new movie, and IMO it breathed new life into a dying franchise.

It's official. Transformers 3's subtitle is...

Dark of the Moon

Wonder if I'll have to take a valium before I see this one too.  Roll Eyes

... to prevent you from Mooning back?  Wink

Wonder if that's just a fill in to not give away something about the bad guy?

I honestly don't get the fan rage at the new Trek.

Its rude to ignore the 40 odd years of history behind Star Trek. People's parents fought to keep Star Trek on air to see the story progress, not to start the story all over again. I understand that the franchise needed to be revitalised, but i'm positive that it could've been done without wiping out everything that had ever been done beforehand.

Besides, parts of the story are flat-out ridiculous.

1) A guy travels back in time, then waits 25 years to do anything. He doesn't travel to his former home to warn them, he doesn't take revenge with his uber ship, he just sits there doing bugger all for a quarter of a century. That's dumb.

2) The sword fight - why is he carrying a sword? How many naval personnel in the 21st century take a sword into battle, even if they are pretty good with it?

3) Kirk graduates and a day later is in command of starship, despite being suspended and stowing away on said ship. Why aren't security throwing him in the brig and ripping him a new sphincter? Spock is more senior than him and he graduates past him skipping 5 ranks in less than 24 hours - Harry Kim was an Ensign for 7 years!

4) Pike promotes a bunch of freshly graduated cadets to nearly every senior position on the ship. I seriously doubt that the entire crew are as wet behind the ears. Even the helmsman is 17...

5) Lens flare - wtf?!

6) They may as well have given Scotty a dancing monkey on a piece of string. What the hell was that thing apart from cheap comic relief with no name?

7) Uhura orders a Cardassian Sunset. They don't make first contact with the Cardies for another 30 years. In fact, there were so many of these 'easter eggs' shotgunned into the script, it seemed more like a middle finger to pre-existing fans than a tip of the hat, since so many of them were wrong. Like Scotty and Admiral Archer's dog, Delta Vega being on the wrong side of the quadrant, the calender system is wrong and host more.

8 ) I didn't think that the Grand Canyon was in Iowa, but my Geography is spotty here...

9)... i'll stop now. I could go on about this all day.

Still, I guess Abrahms even admitted that he doesn't give a damn about pre-existing fans. Hi JJ, here's your seat next to Mike - he did something similar with Transformers. You'll get on just fine.

I honestly don't get the fan whining over it.

So having an opinion that differs from yours is whining? I disliked the movie intensely, and I reserve the right to express my dislike. You have a right to disagree with me, and that's totally cool.

Yeah. Mine. Frankly, I pretty much only hear the hate from people in their thirties and late twenties.

Besides, parts of the story are flat-out ridiculous.

In keeping with the finest traditions of Star Trek.

1) A guy travels back in time, then waits 25 years to do anything. He doesn't travel to his former home to warn them, he doesn't take revenge with his uber ship, he just sits there doing bugger all for a quarter of a century. That's dumb.

Post traumatic stress and meglomania is funny like that. HE was taking revenge. He had The Plan to save his family and destroy everyone he blamed for it.

2) The sword fight - why is he carrying a sword? How many naval personnel in the 21st century take a sword into battle, even if they are pretty good with it?

It's not much a stretch to think that Pike told him too since he asked for close combat experts.

He's Kirk. The god emperor of Star Trek.

4) Pike promotes a bunch of freshly graduated cadets to nearly every senior position on the ship. I seriously doubt that the entire crew are as wet behind the ears. Even the helmsman is 17...

Eh, it had to happen, why get bent out of shape about the inevitable? Also, I thought the movie was pretty clear that the crew of the Enterprise was all young. Odd since it's supposed to be the new flagship, but again, nothing to get bent out of shape on.

5) Lens flare - wtf?!

You're right there, Abrams needs to find a new signature look.

6) They may as well have given Scotty a dancing monkey on a piece of string. What the hell was that thing apart from cheap comic relief with no name?

Awesomness.

How is any of that anything other then fan/nerd rage? I mean honestly, that ruined the movie for you? I'm sorry.

8 ) I didn't think that the Grand Canyon was in Iowa, but my Geography is spotty here...

It was a mine.

Still, I guess Abrahms even admitted that he doesn't give a damn about pre-existing fans. Hi JJ, here's your seat next to Mike - he did something similar with Transformers. You'll get on just fine.

Have you gone back and watched the Transformers cartoon recently? I have. It's horrible. Utterly unwatchable. I loved it as a child, but it does not hold up. Bay did a very good job rendering that material watchable.

I honestly don't get the fan whining over it.

So having an opinion that differs from yours is whining? I disliked the movie intensely, and I reserve the right to express my dislike. You have a right to disagree with me, and that's totally cool.

No, and I should have clarified that you weren't whining. I've seen far too much of it about the movie though. You're firmly in the fan rage part. Which you have a right to, but it still doesn't make any sense to me.

For the record, you make a few good points Krensky but we're never going to agree on this. It most certainly is fanrage on my part. And yes, the little things did spoil it for me - it felt like they were trying to show off attention to detail, but getting it utterly wrong.

I have the Transformers cartoons on DVD. I love watching them with my son, and I still enjoy them. Ok, so I cringe at some of the dialogue, but it's a kid's cartoon from the 80s. I'll always hate Bay for the crap that he did with that franchise. Especially the stupid flames on Optimus Prime.

I mean, flames? Why flames?!

I guess they could have just let the series die.   Roll Eyes

Ultimately, I feel that this would've been kinder.

Damn thing needs a tambourine.

Flames are freakin' sweet.  And yes, there are working trucks with flames on them, and lights and every other crazy thing you can think of.

Actually, that 25 year gap was explained in one of the deleted scenes. The ship was captured by the Klingons and Nero was taken prisoner.

Now, to move away from Star Trek for just a moment...

The Hobbit is staying in NZ!
