This, on the other hand, doesn't surprise me at all (not after Back to Earth's monster ratings). Now let's hope that these new eps rise above the specials - I thought BtE's primary contribution was showcasing how very old the show and cast looked.

Fringe ended here a couple of weeks ago. The identity of the traveller from the Other Side on the bridge and the cliffhanger twist were both really obvious; the ultimate fate of Bell perhaps not so much. The comics covers were an amusing joke that it's pity DC weren't in on in time to actually put those issues out to cash in on them. While I think it would benefit from a shorter season, I think the creators have done a decent job and I am looking forward to the next one.

Castle and Bones both finished up here this week, as did V.

The first two shows thrive on the UST between the male and femal leads, and it's a factor I don't particularly care about. The trope is getting tired, or maybe I'm getting tired of it.

Seriously, with Bones it took however many seasons this is for the secondary couple to finally hook up (with I admit some decent material in the lead up) but we have the primary couple running off to the opposite ends of the world. For a year. It's in a really really good place for the series to end and I sort of hope they do because I've given up caring whether Brennen and Booth hook up or not.

With Castle, the situation at the end of season just feels like a yet another mean spirited set up on the part of the writers. At least Brennen has the excuse of being an emotional cripple, because Beckett and Castle just look like indecisive twits too interested in powergaming each other to see the truth. Frankly, I'd rather a series where the leads get to act like adults in addition to solving murders.

V has been a fucking travesty, and while the Father Jack homily and the stuff with Marcus and Hobbes is intriguing, I think they may have come too late because I will be honestly surprised if this gets a second season. But apart from all the myriad small and not so small failings of the writers -- including the sky turning red from the original being another thing given to the visitors to do in the new one -- any show that hangs the premise of the major event of its season finale on the mother ship having absolutely no sort of security/surveilance system fitted, just doesn't deserve to live.

I mean, the visitors have hard-wired spy cameras into the Peace Ambassador jackets and infiltrated our communications infrastructure to the point the heroes have to use esoteric means to communicate, and the mothership is "locked down" but nothing picks up Erica and Joshua's minute long non-hostile conversation, or the events in the egg chamber, or unauthorised access of the brainwashing annex? And how about Anna thinking she can pass of Joshua, whom Erika met the previous episode, as a human? Or the fact that Erika and Hobbes were sitting quite openly next to each other in Jack's church when he's meant to be her number one must hunt down target?

Honestly, I don't think they were trying to surprise anyone with the Fringe finale so much as set up an interesting thread for Season 3.
