SF writer and Marcon 2001 drinking buddy James P. Hogan.

And, as a lifelong Dodgers fan, I salute the passing of a respected opponent.

Ohio has been hit hard this past week: Pekar, Steinbrenner and Lebron James.

Maury Chaykin has passed away.

Born on July 27 1949, he was in recent years best known for his role as overweight master detective Nero Wolfe.

His other roles included guest stints in Lexx, Andromeda, Boston Legal & the pilot for Eureka as the title town's original sheriff who preceded Jack Carter. He appeared in two episodes of Stargate SG-1, and was in one of the Driver short-films.

He died on his 61st birthday on July 27 2010.

RIP .... Maury was a great character actor who was willing to take on any role they would let him from the town attorney in Mystery (yes, the hockey movie w/Russell Crowe) to the broker in Entrapment (yes, Catherine Zeta-Jones & Connery). He will be sorely missed.

James J. Kilpatrick, columnist and editor.

Although some online blogs have resurrected his early racism, I remember him for the past 10 years in our local paper as a clear writer on law and the English language. His quarterly sessions presiding over the Court of Irks, Peeves, and Crotchets was always fun. There were sad days we he ended his columns on law, and later on English.

Tony Curtis died, though I think I'm not alone in the camp of "he wasn't dead already?".
