Hi.

Been working on a new Advanced Action, converted from a Conan rules supplement, but I think very useful in any setting eg Swashbucklers, Pulp Heros, Space Opera.

Swinging Attack

1 Full Action . Attack Action

Seizing your chance, you grab a rope (or vine etc), swing and attack a foe. You may select one of the following as the attack type: Bull Rush, Standard Attack or Trip.

With the Bull Rush Option, you gain +1 bonus to Athletics check for every five feet moved.
If instead you make a Standard Attack with a Melee Weapon, you gain +1 bonus to attack roll for higher ground.
If you choose Trip Attack, you gain a +1 bonus to Athletics roll for every 5 feet travelled and knock the foe off his feet. A succesfull Trip also deals 1D6 of subdual damage to the foe. A failed Trip attempt results in you being pulled from the rope and taking 1d6 Subdual.

To land safely from the swing on a desired spot, make an Acrobatics roll (DC15) or fall prone. Otherwise, you can hold onto the rope unil your next Action.

Would welcome some feedback on this.

Thanks.

Seems fun and balanced enough. A little bit complicated though. I wouldn't mind if there were three or two different tricks instead of one. Particularly, I don't see why Trip is benefiting from the character swinging, while the other two make a lot of sense to me.

Thanks.

Yes, for some reason this type of Action seems tricky in any game system. I had a look at the GURPS Swashbucklers version and its even more complicated. Grin

I guess the Swinging Trip gets its bonus because of its momentum. Kinda in the same way a Sweeping Kick (chopping someones legs away from under them) is more powerful than just Triping someone.

I'll have another think about it though. Smiley

Anyway, here's another. I remember this used to be big in the Stormbringer game.

Riposte

Parry Trick (Forte)

With a succesful Parry, you may make an immediate Standard Attack action on your foe. The Attack is with the weapon used to Parry and has a +2 bonus to hit. No matter how many times you Parry, you can only make one Riposte per round.

Swinging down and knocking someone off their feet with a couple of delicately place feet seems like a Trip effect?

I suppose there's the swing down and bump into the foe pushing him back (which I think would be a Bull Rush.)

There's obviously the swing holding the rope in one hand, slashing with sword in the other hand (Standard Melee Attack). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swashbuckler_(film)

And if the hero swings down with legs in front of him, kicking away the foes legs (a Trip maybe ?.)

One option that seem to be missing is the Batman/Spiderman style two footed kick to the head or torso. (Standard Unarmed Attack, with damage bonus for speed ?)

Need to dig out my DVD of Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. Seem to remember some Swinging Attacks in that movie.

Parry Trick (Forte)
With a succesful Parry, you may make an immediate Standard Attack action on your foe. The Attack is with the weapon used to Parry and has a +2 bonus to hit. No matter how many times you Parry, you can only make one Riposte per round.

Recommend using a free attack to avoid sparking attack chains. Also, using the same weapon for the riposte as the parry is probably unnecessary, so long as an unarmed or melee attack is used to riposte. Streamlined version below (and now in my house rules):

RIPOSTE
Initiative Action (Forte): Once per round on a successful Parry you may make an immediate free melee or unarmed attack against your opponent.

Excellent version, very cool. Thanks, MugMug.

I'll add it to the Conan Conversion on the Wiki with your permission. Smiley
