It does have the advantage of being awesome, and making more sense than most of Lucas' later thoughts.

(Midichlorians?  Really?  Just sense the Force in the little git.  Stop making the Force a side effect of blood borne parasites.  Angry )

Midichlorians being attracted to force users would have been interesting. What I hated was that he made the ability to use the Force into something you solely have to be infested born with rather than can learn to use.

Of course, most people back in the day assumed the clones would be the badguys, and they've turned out to be one of the greatest things about the last decade of the franchise next to KotOR I & II.

See, that's how I always thought it was from the very start.

*EDIT* For the record though, I still think that mitochondria Midichlorians are fucking dumb.

I'm glad you like mitochondria.

For what it's worth, I always thought the Force was something anyone could be trained to use; some folks are much more inclined to it, and the vast majority of folks aren't worth training at all.

I'm sure there are a lot of things there that Lucas never thought about: if it's all about the mito Midichlorian (what a dumb name, too) concentration in your blood, can you get a transfusion from a Jedi to become a Jedi yourself? Can you concentrate your own blood samples to boost force power? Can you slaughter lots and lots of Jedis, concentrate their Midithingies, inject them into yourself and become the Uberjedi?

[end mind wipe]

While the whole Midichlorians = Force ability is crap, I have retconned it in my mind to where the midis are only a indication of Force ability.  Thus as one grows stronger in the Force, more midis are attracted to you.   However, they have nothing to do with your abilities.  It makes more sense and doesn't require the normal amounts of angst to go with it.  Unfortunately, I have had to block the sad truth from my own mind.

[reapply mind wipe]

I'm pretty sure you just say "no" to all those things and it would seem pretty reasonable. I know that in the EU, midichlorians generally do not transfer well during the cloning process, although it is possible to make clones of living Jedi with some ability.

I, for one, find this a spectacular villain motivation. There's a whole story arc in there someplace involving serial killers in the galaxy far far away.

You could even live it ambiguous whether it works or not, and if so, how.

Consider the various 'spice' drugs and their capability of boosting physical, mental and even psychic abilities, and I can see someone harvesting Jedi for their blood and refining it into a narcotic.

I always thought it was strange Elam tried to sell some death sticks to an obvious Jedi. Maybe "death sticks" are made from dead Force users.
