Because The Cat Told Me To...

Getting to that time of year when I start planning out movies for a Hallowe'en movie party that my gaming group has been holding for about three years now.

This years theme is Horror/Something Else - Horror/Comedy, Horror/Mystery, Horror/Romance/Musical/Hallowe'en/Christmas... (three guesses as to what movie that last one refers to Tongue ).
So far, besides the aforementioned H/R/M/H/C movie, as a tentative list we have:
American Werewolf in London (Horror/Comedy - late night)
The Mummy (Horror /Comedy)
House (Horror/Comedy Kids' time)
House 2 (Ditto)
Pirates of the Caribbean (Horror/Swashbuckling/Comedy Kids' Time)
Ghostbusters (Horror/Comedy Finishing off Kids Time)
Innocent Blood (Horror/Comedy Late Night)
Fright Night (Horror/Comedy)
Dead Again (Horror/Mystery)
Old Dark House (Horror/Comedy - with early Boris Karloff Smiley )
Bubba Hotep (Horror/Comedy - we needed to include The Chin somewhere....)
Shaun of the Dead (Horror/Comedy)

Any other suggestions for Horror/Something Else? We seem well set on Horror/Comedy, but Late Night seems a bit thin. And I would like something besides comedy for each slot. A good solid mystery or two with elements of the supernatural would be excellent. (I recommended The Omen, but I gather that it did not age well.)

Some I would be more than willing to give the boot - we had House and House II at another Hallowe'en party not all that many years ago, and Ghostbusters has been done to death, for example. This time around good movies are what we are looking for. Tongue

The Scary Movie series is right out. (How do I hate thee? Let me count the ways....)

The Auld Grump, about the only non-negotiable flick is the Horror/Romance/Musical/Hallowe'en/Christmas movie....

And if you go Alien3, go the Director's Cut, which I feel to be the scarier version.

Are you a fan of the flick, A? If so, then we're members of a very small club.

Count me too. Alien3 completes the retelling of Beowulf.

Yup, I love me my Alien3 ever since I saw it back in the day even though it basically pissed all over Dark Horse's original post-Aliens continuity AND the presence of the egg in the beginning was wall bangingly stupid (if it was going to be anywhere, it should have been in the landing gear well of the drop ship. Or else revealed that Bishop had screwed them thanks to Bourke's use of a hardwired Company override).

Not a particular fan of Resurrection; bringing back both Ripley and the aliens in such a needlessly complicated fashion really didn't do much for me, despite Luc Besson's gorgeous visuals. Having Winona Ryder and an extra as your only sympathetic characters isn't a clever move.

Well, I know even fewer folks that like the fourth one (I'm not among them - despite the few reasons you cite to look past the glaring flaws). I'll add another: it's almost the Aliens on Earth story we've all wanted since the second film, but it even wusses out on that. Sigh.

Yes indeed - and that funeral sequence against the birth of the alien? ::swoons:: So good.

But I've threadjacked enough. Back to AG's Halloween extravaganza!

If you want screw with the head: Ju-on (the original Japanese version of "The Grudge") or Gozu (Takashi Miike's very, very David Lynch salute).

I got my copy of Dee Snider's "Van Helsing's Curse" on DVD a couple of years back and it has become a Halloween staple of theatrical rock performance around my house. Probably the best horror soundtrack around.

Heh - I seem strangely in the minority here, in regards to Alien3. I disliked it enough that I have not bothered seeing any Alien flick since.

While Alien is kind of not what I am looking for it does fill in a couple of other movies that I had not considered - Event Horizon and Lifeforce (Late night). I am sad to say that I actually liked Lifeforce when it came out... you may conjecture as to why....  Roll Eyes (What can I say, I was a Young Grump back then. Tongue ) Any other Horror/SF out there that I am not remembering right now?

Sorry, Glimmerrat, I seem to recall most of those as straight up horror. (Gods Ghostship brought me back - it felt like an old bad horror movie. Smiley While bad, I had a good time. (13teen Ghosts was another by the same company, and felt much the same on my nostalgia buttons.) Pumpkinhead is one of my favorite movies - while far from perfect I liked the fact that the demon had purpose, and that calling him forth had a price. A very decent Call of Cthulhu type movie. The Gate on the other hand....

And finishing off late night Angel Heart (Horror/Mystery) and Ghost Story (Horror/Mystery). (n case anyone wondered - Late night = Nudity/Sex.

The Bride (Horror/Romance)

And another Horror/Romance movie who's title I cannot recall, that I have been trying to remember for years. Basic premise: An archaeologist and his wife uncover a mummy that comes back to life and remembers said wife as his long ago love. She tells the mummy that she is married, and the mummy responds something along the lines of 'I have spent five thousand years inside of a box. I can wait anther lifetime, and lets her and her husband go their merry way.

Years later the mummy is now a respected Egyptologist when the wife's brother shows up looking for him. It seems that Archaeologist Hubby is rather a bad apple, and the brother thinks that he is planning on killing the girl. This turns out to be completely correct, he is slowly poisoning her, hoping to inherit her parents' money.

Mummy and brother rescue her, and mummy and the late Archaeologist's wife live happily ever after.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? It would have been showing on cable in the mid-nineties. I think that the part I liked best was the mummy's willingness to take the long view.
