Has anyone had a chance to see the pilot episode of Chuck yet? It has been released on the internet in advance of the official air date in late September, much like the pilots for Bionic Woman and The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

(Oh, and it looks like this will be the lead-in show to Heroes on Monday nights)

LOL good work Gentry, you managed to cover all three shows with that!

Personally, I think the ads for Chuck are hilarious and make me curious about the show, but what really sold me was when you go to the website and play on Chuck's laptop, he has spam mail in his inbox from Primatech paper. Yikes!

Ahh, but this show is on NBC, not Fox. It would only be doomed if it was a tightly written drama with a big name cast. Yes, I'm still upset about Studio 60 getting nuked over 30 Rock Sad

Anyways, I've watched the first episode and it seemed to have a healthy mix of drama and comedy. More comedy than Burn Notice, but not too much. They're definatly going for a cinematic level of physics as well.

Morena Baccarin, Inara Serra, is one of the view Firefly actors that doesn't give a show the kiss of death.  While yes Stargate SG-1 ended I think that had more to do with the long run the show had than the her addition.  She is also in Heartland a summer drama on TNT or TBS or something like that.  It seems to be doing all right.

Also is the engineer going to be in something soon?

If you mean Jewel Staite (Kaylee), she's on Atlantis now.

That's right I couldn't for the life of me remember which show it was.  Thanks

I'm not. I dug Studio 60, more after it caught its stride, but it was never funny, and wasn't especially engaging when it focused on the drama. Now 30 Rock, that show knows what it is, and it excels at it. It's a riot!

Actually, it had to do with Sony, which bought MGM. When it reviewed all of MGM's properties, it concluded that SG-1 - being the longest running sci-fi show in U.S. history - was worth much, much more money and priced it out of the market. No one could pay the fees required to view it and worse, Sci Fi owns the exclusive broadcast rights, meaning that even if someone else were willing to pay, no one could run it without Sci Fi's permission. Feeling (IMO justifiably) bent over the whole thing, Sci Fi chose to hold onto the rights and give Sony an ultimatum: lower your price or lose your show. We can see how that's played out.

This is also, BTW, the reason why the show is continuing in DVD movies. Sci Fi doesn't have the right to quash those. I suspect that after a suitable amount of time has passed and Sci Fi feels its made its point, the channel will broadcast the DVD movies, but the show won't be comin' back.

Jewel Staite? She's the new doctor over on Stargate: Atlantis now. She showed up for the Comic-Con Atlantis panel. With her and Carter joining that cast, the show might improve dramatically, which would be a good thing, as it's kinda been towing the line since its inception.

The Stargate shows seem to be a lovely rest home for homless actors from cancelled sci-fi shows.  Smiley

New season starting in september looks interesting at least. We'll see how many make it out of the crucible. I must admit that although I couldn't really stomach Atlantis in its early run, it has grown on me. Dr McCay (sp?) and the two aliens on the team are ok, everyone else is dead weight at far as I'm concerned. The stories have been getting better I suppose. Carter and Kaylie hopefully will improve Atlantis a measurable amount. Considering that Atlantis really hails from the old school version of sci-fi shows, it should really be hitting its sweet spot in the 3rd and 4th seasons. Here's hoping.

I thought the show improved when they laid off the Wraith. As villains, they're just hollow replicas of the Goa'uld as far as I'm concerned.

Atlantis really needs a strong SG-1 style metaplot, or much better subplots. The Stargate franchise's primary strength has rarely been its week-to-week.

Sadly, I'm still thinking this will either be the show's last, or second to last. At the Comic-Con Atlantis panel, the Sci Fi reps once again illustrated their colossal blindness to the nature of their medium by proclaiming that the only way to keep the show on the air is to watch it live. "Don't TiVo it," they say. Yeah. Good luck with that.

Tards.

It's sad that the people who run a television channel specializing in sci-fi would be so clueless about what sci-fi fans want.  Or what sci-fi fans will tolerate.  Or even what makes sci-fi *good*.

Case in point: The Dresden Files (not the best show, but still) gets canned, while SciFi keeps playing Wrestling week after week. Sure, they don't have to pay to produce the Wrestling, but still. It's like having a whole bunch of live-action shows on the Cartoon Network. Or drama on Comedy Central. Or actual news on Fox News Tongue

The problem with the Dresden Files was that it continued to have problems with the crew in the city where it was filmed. I think I read some where that film production crews kept threatening a strike or a walk-out and the studio and the Sci-Fi channel didn't want to risk it.

Personally, I think that is a lame excuse (to echo Gentry). I'm willing to bet that fans would have accepted a new season of the Dresden Files that took place elsewhere and even on a different set.

Heck, most fans have put up with upteen cast changes for "Doctor Who" and no telling how many times they've changed the inside of the TARDIS. I think we would have been just as forgiven for set dressing.
