Ok, I got my dead tree copy of FC and I'm ready to rock. As well as reading it cover to cover, I'm revisiting a few old sources of inspiration.

So, for my FC: Sword and Sorcery campaign, I'm hitting the following:

1) The 13th Warrior (Film). Cracking film viewing for any fantasy fan and perfect plot for an adventure. Varied group of heroes assemble, are asked to save a village, travel, fight evil and track it to its lair. Great battle scenes and dungeon exploration. To use plot in your game, just pick a world location and add your own species and monsters.

2) The Conan Series (Books). The ultimate for tough, bloodthirsty swashbuckling action with added  supernatural menace. The best are by Robert E Howard. Thieves sneaking into the Houses of Sorcerors and battling fantastic monsters. Lost Cities in deserts and jungles. Pirates discover cursed islands. Plenty of plot ideas there, just change monsters to suit yourself.

3) Jason and the Argonauts (Film, the original). Perfect naval adventure. Monsters. Islands. Heroes. What more do you want ?

4) Lord of the Rings (Film). Not strictly Sword and Sorcery but if you squint just right......

Which movies, books, comics are your sources of inspiration for fantasy and why ??

I've only just started reading the Conan books for the first time (I bought a rather nice omnibus edition), and was quite surprised to discover the first book was with him already established as king.

Yes, I suppose that seemed a bit weird. I think the Omnibus you have is the one collects the Conan stories in the order REH wrote them. Earlier editions collected the stories in chronological order.

When writing the Conan stories, Howard maintained that the ghost of Conan was at his shoulder, relating the tales to him at random, covering different periods of Conans life. So thats how he wrote them.

Still I hope you enjoy them. I always found them to be excellent  Smiley

1) The 13th Warrior (Film).

aka Eaters of the Dead, aka Beowulf meets 10th century travelogue with a tiny smidge of Lovecraft.

Ok, well it depends what I'm doing, but the game I keep hoping to run:

Last Exile (TV Series)
Wild Wild West (TV Series, Film)
The Council Wars (Book Series)
Scrapped Princess (TV Series)
Temeraire (Book Series)
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (Book)
Laputa: Castle in the Sky (Film)
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (Film)
Darkover (Book Series)
Ivalice (Game Setting)
Sharpe (Book Series)
Horatio Hornblower (Book Series)
Aubrey-Maturin (Book Series)
The State (Book Series)

Probably a few others. Sort of a Gonzo Steam Punk setting, that list actually hints at the central secret of the world though.

I love me some Harryhausen. Clash of the Titans is also good, if you can put up with a shirtless Harry Hamlin Tongue

I would also recommend A Knight's Tale. Sure, it's not everyone's cup of tea, but there's plenty there to inspire a game or three. Also, a few ideas for what the rest of the party can do while the Lancer is engaged in a little one-on-one combat.

I'll have to go through my DVD collection when I get home for some more ideas.

Here's a link I use which has some D20 oriented info and adventures for a Hyborian Age game:

Maybe useful for other games too.

Savage Worlds had an excellent, IMO, Solomon Kane sourcebook.  The book is largely fluff as the only rules in the book are the adaptions needed from the base Savage Worlds book which is fairly rules light as is.

Strange as it may seem, Lord of the Rings is technically classifed as Sword and Sorcery in literary taxonomy.

It may be a bit old school, but the book of Genesis is an interesting starting point, at least I think so.  Of course, when you're the GM, you are playing god.  (Now where is my halo smiley?)

l5r. I love the setting and i do love the system, but the rules have gone all over the place for 3rd edition. It' just doesn't balance with itself. Perhaps they'll sort it with their new 4th edition, maybe not. I'm going to run it with Fantasycraft. My dead tree copy was mailed out yesterday so it should be here early next week. My large back catalog of l5r books will be my inspiration. I'll just start converting them. Fortunately my play group is now scattered across the world so until I get a new group together I have the free time to work on that (Provided the simultaneously ordered battlestar galactica blu-ray collection doesn't steal my soul first...  Cheesy)

Wink

I think there's a good deal of potential for a Genesis-style game. The TV series Kings showed that you could take parts of the Bible and turn it (with some creative liberties) into a pretty interesting story.

After much hemming and hawing, the setting I came up with for my Gameday games draws inspiration from:

Zothique stories by Clark Ashton Smith
Conan stories by RE Howard

Cheesy fantasy flicks:
Conan the Barbarian/Destroyer
The Beastmaster
Krull
The Scorpion King
