Clarissa (Bubbalin) is enjoying a delicious breakfast in the lobby of her hotel.  Sitting alone she scans the newspaper and half watches the television for news events she can make use of.

She is also contemplating contacting Amanda Noakes under the guise of being interested in hiring security.  It is a possibility she might be able to get Amanda to arrange several invites for her if she can find the right angle.

Quote from: Sapphire City News

News:
The funeral for Sophia Phillips, partner of Sapphire City entrepreneur (and alleged crime figure) Mathew Phillips will be held tomorrow.  The police commissioner has indicated a "strong but discreet" police turn out will be in place to prevent any hostilities between rival crime figures who may attend.  Sophia was found dead three days ago in a hotel room at the Sapphire Sceptre Casino from a suspected drug overdose.

Celebrity Gossip:
The celebrity Sapphire City loves to hate, Boris Pilton (heir of the Pilton construction empire) is reportedly planning an A-List celebrity event at his new private nightclub 'HighRisers' to celebrate the birthday of his famous handbag dog 'Botox'. Details are still not finalised, but the party crowd of Sapphire City’s high rollers eagerly awaits invitation.

Out and about:
Russian girl band / gangsta rap outfit 'Spetnaz Sistaz' perform three live shows at the PartyDome. Two new restaurants open this week 'Evocation' and 'XSLT'. The cast of 'Friends - The Next Generation' has a promotional poster-signing event at the 'Karazhan Galleria' shopping mall. Pirates of the Caribean XIV is still going strong at the box office.

Business and Finance:
Pheonyx Engines and Pheonyx Military Systems continue to push their ongoing rivalry into the social circles of Sapphire City.  Tonight both companies are hosting rival events, with PE unveiling their latest sports car release at a cocktail party and Military Systems holding their quarterly black-tie masquerade ball.

GC Cue: Your next post should be an outline of what you hope to achieve, refer to the one Nezmaster did as an example.  You can include a paragraph of descriptive background text if you like (for anything prior to your plan starting).

Sipping a glass of juice as she surveys the empty plates of her buffet breakfast, Reese wriggles luxuriantly in her seat. The guilt of having gorged herself is slightly assuaged by the knowledge that she had already spent two and a half hours in the hotel swimming pool before breakfast. Nonetheless she glances down at the grey halter top she threw on over her bikini to look for the non-existent bulge in her stomach.

Glancing at the entrance across the main entrance that the hotel restaurant overlooked, Reese could make out 'Sapphire Sceptre Casino' in large golden letters with what she supposed were intended to be sapphire gemstones bordering the letters. Recollecting the article on page 3 of the paper, she flipped it open once more to take another look and confirm that this was the place of Sophia's death.

OOC: Also going to read the article in more detail and see if she can find out more.

"Interesting," she muttered to herself, "Maybe I should take a look."

Sitting up, she contemplaces another croissant and grimaces at the dampness against the white mini skirt the threw over her bikini. Using her feminine ability for multi-tasking, she simultaneously decides to forego the croissant, and that she probably would have been more comfortable going commando.

Finished with breakfast, she gestures to the waiter, who seems to appear at her side with magical speed, and signs the meal against her room. Despite her desire to change into something more comfortable, Reese gestures at the paper and queries the waiter.

"So what was the story?"

Glancing up expectantly, Reese adjusts herself so that the waiter has a better view of her profile, instead of being distracted by staring down her cleavage as he spoke to her.

Spinning through her mind, she mentally wonders if an entrepreneur or crime figure would be more useful to the agency, and also whether the funeral would be too soon for a single girl to catch his attention.

OOC: So, what does Reese learn from the article and what does the waiter tell her?

OOC: If you want to chase after the husband you will be working against several potential obstacles.  Most likely being possible anger/grief over his wife's death and a need to avoid any unusual or suspicious behaviour at a time when he is under so much scrutiny and his wife's death is still being investigated.  There will of course be other guests there, approaching some of these under the circumstances may be difficult - but you can of course contrive situations to bring other eager men (or others) to your side.

The waiter appears uncomfortable talking about a death that happened 3 days ago at this hotel.  He is also finding it hard not to stare at certain parts of your body while repeating official replies obviously prepared by the hotel's management.

Quote from: Waiter
A most unfortunate situation, of which very little is known at this stage.  The management have asked me to assure guests that the hotel is perfectly safe.  While she was liked by most of Sapphire City, Mr and Mrs Phillips are allegedly involved with some dangerous people.  The hotel and casino have a zero tolerance policy on illegal drugs because of tragedies such as this.

Would you care for some more freshly squeezed juice?

The paper has the specific details relating to tomorrows funeral.  It also has brief details about the ongoing investigation, and the associates of Mr and Mrs Phillips.

+ The police force is still investigating the issue, with both the Vice Squad and Forensic Investigations involved.  No reason for her having a hotel room has been given, as she lives with her husband at their mansion in the fashionable River district.

+ Security at the hotel and casino has been briefly called into question, with the spokesman for Retail and Leisure Security issuing a statement that his organization has "... no permission or obligation to control the discreet private behaviour of hotel guests in their own room".

+ There are brief details of the schools and college Sophia attended, and of a business partnership with two prominent fashion designers of the city, and various high society events she has attended over time.

+ Sophia's natural family is mentioned briefly - including her brother who is a bit of a wild child, and her sister and mother who died in a traffic accident 2 years ago.  There is also discussion of her father who has a senior role with Pilton Construction and remarried 8 months ago to a younger woman close to Sophia's age.

+ Mathew Phillips is a senior partner with Bluejay International Consultancy and is often away from the city, travelling on business.  He is alleged to have connections with the Windsor crime family.  Some members of the rival Girard crime family are also expected to attend and pay their polite respects (at a time when situations between the two families are "tense").

GC Cue: You can fast forward to tomorrow’s funeral if you do not wish to attend either of tonight's Pheonyx events.  Alternatively you may have some other things you wish to take care of first.  At the funeral anyone you speak with could ask how you know the deceased, or where you are from – so it’s worth having a brief initial response prepared that you can elaborate on if required.  It would be good for me to know what type of contacts you would ideally be targeting at any event you attend.  Have a think about these points before replying, as there will be a delay before I can come back to this thread.

OOC: Reese wasn't intending to go in with all stops pulled out to seduce the husband, but basically the idea is also to see how much attention he pays her. Possibly seeing that he has already accepted her death, which means he might have planned it. The other point is that there's no time to make a first impression as a potentially stressful time in people's lives.

Letting the waiter complete his prepared response, Reese rotates back to let him get a better view and waits until his eyes eventually come back to meet hers. Figuring the dumb blonde response is going to be the only one that will potentially elicit a response, she gives him a huge smile and leans in towards him.

"Okay, don't want to pry. I just figure you might have heard or seen something." Reese offers disarmingly, and discreetly to the young man. "Seeing as you work just off the lobby."

Waiting for his response, Reese wonders if she's hit a potential dead end in her conversation. Nonetheless, she decides that a call to Synth is in order to get a bit more of a background on Sophia, and potentially to develop a brief story for the funeral. Potentially something along the lines of having briefly met her at school or a social event and how they had gotten along and always wanted to catch up but never did.

OOC: Depending on how things go here, Reese may or may not attend an event tonight.

Well a lot of police and investigators have been around over the last few days, and the North East wing of level 13 has been closed off to the public for the time being.  I've heard there may have been some problem with the security camera footage as well.

Giving him a wide eyed stare of amazement, a look that Reese hopes will convey to him her surprise and admiration of how well connected he is, she lets her mouth drop open slightly.

"Wow!" She exclaims, deliberately just a little too loud to be discreet so as to try and convey her genuine surprise, but hopefully not so loud as to draw unwanted attention.

Fixing him with a look that is half transfixed, and half curious, Reese attempts to lure him into offering a bit more.

OOC: What can Clarissa tell about the waiter from looking at him and the way he speaks? Simple stuff like age, educational attainment, social grouping (nerd, jock, goth etc), whether he's a career waiter or a student? If I have to roll for it (or anything else), I'm happy for your dice to tell me my luck. Smiley

I don't really know much else about it, its been very hush hush.  My friend Phil got hauled over the coals initially about the missing security footage, but I think its accepted now that their was more to it then a junior tech deleting some data.

He is a middle class male in his very early twenties.  He probably started part time while studying or maybe hoping to make it big in Sapphire City, but has fallen into a comfortable rut that pays in line with his expectations for minimal effort.  For someone his age he is a bit of a looker who has put a significant amount of effort into his hair, clothes and physique.  A smudge on the inside of his right wrist could be a nightclub re-entry stamp from the night before.

Going for the ditzy blonde impression, Reese lets her eyes widen even more, and breathes a semi-ecstatic, "Wow," at his revelation.

Thinking that she has kept him long enough to start drawing attention, Reese continues, "I bet you would have some great stories to tell." Pausing, she dangles for a moment and with a tantalizing smile drops, "Maybe you can come up to my room ehrn you finish your shift?" Gesturing to the receipt, "You've got the number."

Frowning suddenly as if she has changed her mind, and playing it just long enough to draw him in she adds. "Actually... ... ... I'm staying with my father. Why don't you give me a call and I'll meet you?" The last said as an imperative.

Without giving him time to reply, she raises her voice, winks at him and gushes, "Thanks so much for explaining that to me. I didn't know that strawberries were fruit from a straw plant. But they were delicious."

Smiling airily at him, Reese gets up, a finger twirling at her hair and places a light touch on his arm. With a step away from the table, she seemingly remembers her hand bag and returns leaning down at an angle so as to offer him another glimpse of her figure.

Rising rapidly, she brushes against him before he can lean back from his voyeuristic gaze and makes a number of profuse apologies, feigning genuine ignorance of the direction of his gaze. A number of quick steps, away from the restaurant, she pauses at the threshold to the foyer and twirls to give him a broad smile, 'incidentally' displaying her figure in the movement, before disappearing into the elevators.

Back at her room, Reese fishes her phone from her bag as she slips out of her clothes, dropping them on the ground on the way to the bathroom. Running the shower, her demeanor goes back into her usual self and she dials a number.

OOC: Reese is going to call both Synth and Nietzsche one after the other to try and get a background as well as run some of the info she has acquired. The plan after that is to take a nice warm bath, wash out that chlorine (looks like that take work gentlemen!) and prepare herself for Mr Waiter.

Reese has a voicemail message on her hotel room phone.  It sounds like the waiter from this morning.  He sounds very nervous and very hopeful, and not very confident at all.

Quote from: Voicemail Message
Hi, i'm not sure if you remember me, we spoke at breakfast.  I have a spare ticket to this corporate cocktail party tonight as part of a cadetship I'm trying to get.  I dunno if you like nice cars and stuff but it should be a good night if you aren't already doing anything more important.  My girlfriend doesn't want to go because she wants to have a break to find herself .. and ... I'd feel kinda dumb going by myself.  I hope you can go.  I'm sorry if I came across like a bit of a dewb this morning, I've just had a bit on my mind.  I'll wait out the front of the Sapphire Exhibition center at 7.30 pm and hope you can make it.

Cutscene - Amanda Noake's office

Amanda Noakes is on the phone, wishing she hadn't recently fired two security specialists because they wore a black belt with brown shoes.  But really, they should have known better.

Quote from: Amanda
Hello - Mr Huston - It's Amanada, Amanda Noakes.  I'm very sorry to hear about your daughter Mr Huston, Sophia will be missed by a great many people.  I got your message about hiring bodyguards for your wife and son, unfortunately I'm a bit low on reliable staff who are really up to the standard I demand.  I am interviewing some new candidates this week who seem very promising, so I hope to contact you soon with some good news.

Hearing her fellow agent's voice on the phone, Reese stops tweezing her eyebrows and turns her attention to the phone.

Standing closer to the shower she starts. "Synth, glad I caught you. I was just hoping that you could do me a favour and run a bit of a check on this murder of Sophia Phillips. Allegedly there was some security footage of the night that went missing, so you might be able to trace where that went, and maybe even recover it? The tech on duty was a guy named Phil, and it 'looks' like he deleted the info. I have reason to believe it was somebody else."

"Second, what do you have on Sophia Phillips anyway? Can you pull some information on her? There's an article in the paper that might give you a hand. Also I'd appreciate a cover so I can attend her funeral tomorrow."

OOC: I know the shower thing no longer works. It's just cool! Tongue

With regard to the cover, Reese is going to see if she can use one of her picks to get a cover identity suitable for the funeral.

OOC: Going to have two simultaneous conversations, though in game time they're sequential.

Tired of standing and staring at her own figure in the mirror, checking all the petty imperfections that bothered her as she spoke to Synth, Reese hangs up her conversation and slips into the bath to allow the shower to thunder over her belly, groin and thighs. Holding the phone away from herself she dunks her head under the stream and revels in the warmth before reluctantly puling back out and dialling.

...After a few rings...

Quote from: Nietzsche
"Yeah? Talk to me, what's the story? Right now my plan is I figure out what it's going to take to get this Mike character to take us to his boss. We need to make it crystal clear really fast that we do not deal with the help. I'm also going to dig around this murder, but you'll have to give me a little while - going to need to go out, talk to some people. Anything specific you need?"

"Stephan, can I have you compile me a dossier on Sophia Phillips and the circumstances of her death? It might be worth checking out if she has any history of drug use. If you want to take a look, the murder happened in the North East Wing, Level 13. I presume you can arrange your own access?"

"How soon do you need it? I'm almost fresh off the boat, so things might take a little bit longer than usual. Plus - I already got the few guys I've got digging on Mike the Hammer. I will check out the murder scene now, though - waiting for some calls back anyway. I'll keep you posted if there are issues - I'm guessing you're in the vicinity already?"

OOC: Dr Yes, I'm using my Sources I class ability to consult sources for 1hr to make a request check for a dossier on Mike without spending an action die. We can resolve that in the Scene 1 thread, since it's probably more relevant there. Since I'm playing this guy as a recent arrival, I'm pretending it'll take a little longer than an hour, but mechanicwise it's your call. Once that's done, he'll start pulling together a dossier on Sophia Phillips for Christmas using the same method (he can do it a # of times equal to his action dice). In the meanwhile, he's going to dust off his P.I. skills (getting the agency to get him a matching cover if necessary) and go up to the crime scene.

He probably has no legit reason to be there, and he will determine his approach based on the sort of cops guarding the place. If they look like pros he'll capitalize on his previous experience and renown, act fully professional and offer future assistance/favors, and offer to tell them of anything he finds; if they look incompetent he'll just try to steamroll over them with legalese and bluster and act like he's got every right to be there. If he gets access to the scene, he'll start doing his standard forensic work. Dr Yes - feel free to make any rolls you'd like for me, and pick up the action at any stage of things you find interesting.

Reese leisurely soaps up the loofah by the bath as Stephan speaks and proceeds to work the moisturising shower gel over herself, grimacing at the dry feeling from the chlorine. Salt water never did this to her!

"Funeral's tomorrow at 9:30 and I intend to be there. I'll be up early for a swim tomorrow, so I can read it over breakfast. Call it 8am?" Pausing to reach a spot, Reese then continues as if nothing were amiss. "If you want in, I'm on the scene and I can arrange to lose my keycard to get you onto the elevators. Just tell me where."

OOC: I took the liberty of setting a time for the funeral. Smiley
