So far.  Its got some of the things I liked about CoH/CoV, with the costumes and the powers and the path customization.  I am still getting used to how items and equipment work.

I Alpha/Beta tested this game, and it's not bad. They went with more of an console action feel to it than City Of Heroes/Villains (due to it supposedly going to release on XBox 360 in the future, pending all the red tape they have to jump through with M$). I will personally wait at least 6 months to a year before I go in if I do, only because it gives the devs time to shake out any major power balance issues or game-breaking bugs, plus I rarely if ever early opt into any MMO (I also beta tested CoH, but didn't subscribe until several years later... in fact I just hit my 3 year anniversary in CoH/V).

I do agree, some of the things that they have in the costume creator for Champions Online I would love to see in City of Heroes, back quivers being my main want... I have an archer character  Tongue ... but it's also nice to do asymmetric costumes.

It is designed for more powerful systems/graphic cards, and it may run poorly on lower end systems... really do pay attention to the specs that they list.

I reluctantly let my CoH/CoV sub end when I had a child (and I now have a second one) I've tried a few other MMORPG's, but none have really caught me the way CoH did - when my son's a bit older I was going to resume my sub, but I'll probably try and give Champions a shot first.

The lead designer of CoH/CoV went to do the Champions game after being booted by NCSoft for his attitude.

Actually, that is not true. Jack Emmert was still with NCSoft when they were developing the Marvel MMO... I think that NCSoft decided that it would be bad to support a direct competitor (even after Marvel pulled out of the game), handed him a bunch of money and said "We're buying the City Of IP". With that money, Jack and Cryptic bought the Champions IP and rebranded what was originally going to be the Marvel MMO.

I am not playing the game right now, but the character I played during Open Beta wound up being in the End of Open Beta video and is quite visible... leather jacket, black t-shirt with phoenix picture on it, headset... and dual pistols.

Like I said, I usually wait 6-12 months or more after an MMO launch to potentially play it to let things get settled in.

I'm waiting for a Free Trial before I dip my toe. I played CoX for a couple of years and had a blast, so at least I kinda know what to expect.

Besides, LotRO is opening up Mirkwood soon, so that will be sure to swallow up a fair bit of my free time Wink

I enjoy it; playing since the closed beta.  One thing at least that I think they did right was to design it in such a way that it's easy to expand and build upon later.  I enjoyed CoX for many years but they designed themselves into a corner with their power structures and can't really raise the level cap or anything without a major rewrite of practically everything.  @keth is my global handle

I used to play WoW, and one of my biggest complaints about it was that, yes, everyone I met seemed to play, too.  But that ended up being completely worthless because I could never actually play WITH them unless I wanted to fork over money to transfer characters or start a new level 1 character.

So, how does Champions Online do their servers/worlds?

Is it more like Eve (1 huge universe) or WoW (multiple servers each running an independent instance of the world)?

seems more like eve, everything runs on instances, with obvious population caps.  if your friends are on, it defaults to that instance of the zone they are in, or shows you where they are, so you can join them, or not, as you choose.
