How difficult would it be to give the Triton race a set of legs?  Obviously one of the balances in the race is the 5ft movement on land, the constant prone state, and the banned checks [all of which tie in to a lack of legs].

As it stands the triton works perfectly for my games lizardman race but needs a land speed of 20ft [they aren't supposed to be fast] and to not be always prone.  How would I balance this out in game?  Its already quite a powerful race, but if I add that in would something as simple as dropping size to medium and maybe tack on favoured classes work?

Any suggestions? Or would starting from scratch be best?

Hmmm, thinking in Little Mermaid terms... perhaps a curse or blessing that is handled by a feat? Given that in the original story walking hurt perhaps limiting the speed (not as fast as a human) and/or inflicting subdual damage when the character is walking. "You will still have the same floating gracefulness of movement, and no dancer will ever tread so lightly; but at every step you take it will feel as if you were treading upon sharp knives, and that the blood must flow. If you will bear all this, I will help you.”

The Auld Grump, not a happy story, not at all....

Been a long time since I've read that [I had a primary school teacher who had as read it and compare it with the Disney film].

But I was thinking more of this

as opposed to this

The benefits of the Triton are pretty in sync with what I want the Lizard folk race to have as benefits, I just need them to be able to walk.  The reason for the slow speeds is that they are more at home in the water and have flipper like feet.  Might just have to come up with a new race.

Biggest question is do you want your critters to be large-sized? If they give up that the changes could prove to be remarkably small. Let me look at the point break down and see how close ot an even swapt that is...

Tritons are only large sized because of their big-ol ghetto booty, right? It's all about the tail.

Thats what I figured.

There are large lizardfolk, but they tend to be magical / alchemical alterations [read: test subjects], the regular run of the mill though: completely medium.

Now that Fantasycraft is out, Saurian might be a better starting point than Triton.

I am now considering Selkies... as Fey go they are fairly strange. (Much nicer than most of the fey - and said to have souls. Something most faeries are supposed to lack. (Church Grims are the only other example coming to mind.)

So, when will Origin of the Species: Tir Nan Og be coming out? Tongue

Saurian have filled the role I had in mind perfectly.  In fact Fantasycraft fits my world like a glove [seriously, its uncanny - if only the goblins weren't aligned with the orcs it'd be my campaigns field manual, and its not like thats hard to change].  I'm actually pondering a few iconic class swaps too, but nothing major.

There are a couple of Sidhe I'd love the see Mastercraft-erised.  The fantasy campaign I'm planning atm has an adventure arc regarding the fey folk swapping babies, and the final confrontation [if violent] involves their Dullahan protector, and plenty of room for his steed to maneuver.
