I have invited a good 13 of my role playing friends to play an online FantasyCraft campaign that I will be running soon. I have decided to keep a log of the campaign from one session to the next and to post it publicly here for all to see.

A major facet of the campaign is that each character is part of a Heroic Legacy, or more specifically they're the last member of one. My definition of a Heroic Legacy is a line or group of people with shared goals, powers, and history, like the Jedi Knights, the Seeker of Truth, or the Vampire Slayer.

By making my players design their own Legacy, I hope to get a lot of background material for the world that I don't have to make myself. We'll see how it goes once I start getting characters back.

EDIT: I've attached the body of the message I sent to my friends, if you're wondering. I've also attached a file designed to help with the character creation process.

Neat! I've done this on multiple occasions. Great strategy for keeping folks involved and building backstory.

IMNSHO, this is a great opportunity to use Alignments in a non religious way. Since each of the characters comes from some ancient legacy, let them create an Alignment for that legacy, using the rules in Chapter 7 (and your approval). That way, if they go to a Priest/Paladin class or ever want to grab the Blessed feat, they know the Paths and benefits they would stand to gain.

Have fun!

Sacrilege, I say! Tongue

In all seriousness, this kind of modular build is one of the (presumably explicit) design philosophies I love most about Crafty products. Deconstruct a common element of RPGs or fiction, analyze its base concepts, and rebuild it in a modular, easily expanded/contracted, cross-applicable fashion.

Yeah, if you read the message I sent out to them I discuss making up their own Alignments. Basically, the setting is going to be kinda schizoid anyway, so any Alignment you want to have can be done. The one character sent in so far has an Alignment to his own family/philosophy (the same thing, as far as the character is concerned).

Spent some time making a character with Tim today (results posted above). Oddly enough, he had a wonderful back-story thought up but no name. Go figure, right?
Anyhow, he was trying not to be too cliché, but I reassured him that this is the first time I've seen anyone make a Stern Fighter Soldier in FantasyCraft. Just because it's likely to be a popular combo later doesn't mean that it's cliché.

Anyhow, I'd like to point out that the number of proficiencies a Fighter/Soldier gets is freaking ridiculous to a funny level. Without spending any of his Fight On uses on more proficiencies, he could have had a forte in every type of weapon except one, but he'd at least be proficient in that one. Thankfully, there are special actions he can take for extra proficiency slots, so he had something to do with those points other than getting a proficiency in a weapon type he may have never seen before (black powder, specifically).

Also, I heartily support the making of one handed weapons into ogre sized weapons, for fun. Ogre-machete as a primary weapon = win. (Ok, if he wanted to min-max it, making a Longsword or Katana ogre-sized might have been more effective, but not as cool).

Added a couple more (my friends that I complained about over in Off Topic). Also the first person to get me his char changed his mind, and the one playing the Dark Elf Undead slayer is considering changing (mostly because of the Burden of Ages).
The last one on the list is to be considered a placeholder, because the player changes his mind more frequently than a politician during an election year. So far, he's built a mage, a soldier, and a different mage. Who knows what he'll build next week.

Alright, two players independently decided to make Saurian Fencer Swashbucklers. What the HELL about Saurian screams SWASHBUCKLER? Oh well...

I had a pretty hearty laugh at that.  I think the +2 to any/-2 to any attribute is really versatile and gets people thinking about non-traditional builds for lizard folk, who are normally relegated to stinky swamp things.  Both Swamp and Jungle crest grant fun things for Swashbucklers to do, I think.

Except neither of them has ever played (or, likely, heard of) Earthdawn, and neither is Swamp or Jungle crest. I just don't understand.
