Armor and Weapons are the only gear items for which a "Drake" upgrade is listed. Does that mean such upgrades are not available for other gear (e.g. kits; lanterns), or that such upgrades have no associated cost increase, or some third idea entirely?

IIRC the bit says the penalty applies if the gear "is not especially made for a drake." For those who are saying drakes are broken already, yes, you get fire breath, flight and claws - BUT YOU DON'T HAVE OPPOSABLE THUMBS.

It's called the rule of thumb.

Those who have thumbs make the rules.

I'll be here all week folks.

That was bad ... but not as bad as being forced to watch Pledge This! starring Paris Hilton which is now the cream of the cesspool for bad movies.

*RANT*
It is so bad you can't even make fun of it. In bad films, there is some redeeming value somewhere but not here avoid this like the plague. Before anyone asks, I lost a bet and had to watch. I wanted to get a red hot needle to sear my eyeballs shut less than 5 minutes in. ... Call it two thumbs down on to the detonators to blow this film up.
*End Rant*

Sorry for the digression, folks...

So I feel dumb and I know I'm just missing it but what is the base save DC for poisons? Is it the complexity? The modifiers for the concentrated type upgrades seems to indicate this.

Though overall I'd have to say excellent work here fellas. Fantasy craft is fantastic.

The basic saves for poisons and contagions is found in Chaper 5 under Poisons and Disease (page 216) - Fort DC 12.

My gut says the class is broken, but that's focusing almost entirely on the combat effectiveness of the species. However, you guys do a damned fine job with balance. Resolving that internal (to my mind) contradiction is why I'm playing a Drake in the PbP game starting up.

The actual text in the Beast description states:
"It lacks hands or other fine manipulators and can’t take actions requiring them. It can only use armor, handheld gear, and non-natural weapons specifically modified for its use." [emphasis mine]

The Armor and Weapons sections have upgrades modifying the items to work with various species; the other gear sections do not. The beast description suggests such modifications (in "handheld gear") are at least somewhat expected. Hence, the question. Smiley

In the case of handheld gear only, I think that can be as simple as having said gear crafted specifically for you via a Crafting check, rather than an upgrade per se. You just don't do well buying off the rack Smiley With weapons and armor it's crystal clear what's required.

How does Preparation Cost interact with NPCs generally and the natural spell quality specifically? And as written, said quality costs nothing for 0-level spells, correct?

Also, I miss the minion quality

Played our first game.. LOTS of page flipping.  ..Smiley  However... we did hit a question.  If the Drake breathe weapon gains "Bleed", does the bleed still apply if they make the saving throw for 1/2?  My player has a great idea of working a Drake caster up to improved Breathe weapon, make it cone with the Elemental - Crystal feat... ...run into a horde of enemies.. and give them a 1d4 ticker every round.  Does that work?

The breath weapon is not a natural attack.

The breath weapon is not a natural attack.

The implication being, I think, that it's not clear how the breath weapon could get the bleed quality.

I was trying to figure out the Drake's breath weapon myself, TSK, and it sounds like it is its own stand-alone thing (e.g. not an extraordinary attack from the NPC section, no matter how much they resemble each other Tongue).

Guess I'll weigh in with my questions while I have a moment:

1. In later Tomes will we see a return of the dramatic conflict?  I do so miss them.

2. I haven't looked too closely yet at all the rules (I've mainly been pouring over character creation) but are there penalties/bonuses outside of damage/reach/speed/wounds for being different sizes?

Mostly I'm curious about AC/BAB bonuses penalties and skill checks

3. With focus skills like Ride and Crafting, is it just me or are the bonus 'proficiencies' for INT mod gone?

4. Does everyone get Origin Skills or is that a limited thing?

5. Who wants to get a compendium of starter Personal LTs and Animal Partners going so we can have them all in a handy "Pick and choose your base starting point" list?  I know I'd be interested in something like that.  Its always a struggle for my players when they are given the option to delve into the NPC creation rules and build their own monster/sidekick.  I think they were too spoiled by being given lists and such from DnD.

So far, this book is really awesome though.  I can't wait to hear whats coming down the pipeline next for it.

We are looking at our options, but we have some ideas. Hang in there.

You gain Def bonus/penalties for being larger or smaller than Med. Size has never changed BAB in d20 IIRC.

They are gone. This is a new game, not Spycraft 2.0.

Everyone gets them.

All of the Rogues Gallery and Bestiary in Chapter 6 is a starting point for Animal Partners and PLs Smiley

That makes sense, and was a fairly obvious resolution now that it has been pointed out. [/embarassed]

Yeah, and that's what I've been using myself.  But I could definitely see a PDF (free or otherwise) that is essentially a big list of 50-75 exp characters and creatures that people could just browse through and get some ideas for what to start out with.

Maybe we could call it a Stable full of Awesome or something to fall in line with the Bag Full of Guns line Wink

I've got a few ideas.  I'll throw them to you guys once the GenCon dust settles.

Its not really changed BAB but at least as far as I remember you got size penalties to attack if you were larger than medium (typically the strength bonus negated the penalties but...)  I couldn't remember if that was just a DnD thing or if Fantasy Craft did that too.  Its been too long since I've had a viable option to use large characters.  Which I love. btw.
