For (specifically) historical and low magic systems, I recommend you look at:

Seventh Sea (no personal experience... yet)
Conan RPG
Iron Heroes

But yes, I agree that SC is flexible enough to cover both of these.  I expect Fantasy Craft will retain that flexibility.  In fact, I played a nice fantasy game under the SC system (run by NekoMouser).  I'm trying to start up such a campaign that will transition over to FC.
