Querstion: I notice a number of builds seem to be violating the limits on skills (5 for special NPCs) and feats (5 unless you have henchman/foil (10) or mastermind (15). Am I missing something?

Just to make sure I'm not going bat crazy here... Special NPCs.  Max of 5 feats, 10 Class Abilities.  Right?

Ain't that simple. IIRC there's no limit on the number of class abilities, but there IS a limit on feats, based on what sort of NPC type. IIRC it's 3 feats for a "plain" standard, 5 for a minion, 7 for a foil or henchman, and 10 for a mastermind. It's all there in your 2.0 books Smiley

Hmm. Andersen's right. I missed the Skills restriction. My bad.

For everyone's review (including of course...me), since these are Special NPCs we're building, they get a max of:

10 Class Abilities
5 Skills
5 Feats (this goes up to 10 if they take henchman, 15 if they take mastermind)

I've fixed my entries. The XP values actually drop when dropping skill ranks to accommodate Henchman and more feats, which is interesting.

Of course, we're all still waiting on your masterpiece, Andersen.  Just sayin'.  Wink

Okay good... I didn't completely botch every NPC I've ever created for my players.  After reading the threads, I started to second guess myself. I've got two more coming today.  A urban entry / rear-guard specialist and a PJ NPC.

Codename: Dirt Diver
First and Last Name: Mackenzie Daniels
Birthplace: Ottumwa, Ia
Primary Specialty: Close Air Support
Secondary Specialty: Motor Pool
Military Grade: W-3
Character Bio: Mackenzie was born in a small town in Iowa, where there are two things to do, drink and drink.  While growing up on the farm, he fell in love with flying, when he stole his father's crop duster he was 10, and then dusted the wrong field.  From then on, he was hooked, not only to flying, but flying low. When he got his liscense he took overthe crop dusting for his father, including the maintence of the plane. Upon graduation, he decided to join the Army, he just didn't see himself as a farmer.  When he got through basic, he realized his mistake, the Army only flew choppers, not planes.  So he learned the Ground Attack choppers as well as he could, and in his off times, put in his hours in planes.  Just before his term in the Army was up, he was undergoing joint manuevers with a Air Force unit.  After watching them having hot food, clean beds while he was covered in mud, he said screw it, and applied for the Air Force.  With his expierence in ground attack, and when he qualified, he redefined what they think of Close Air Support.  Time and again, he was given missions that needed precision as well as flying lower than most other pilots felt comfortable, Dirt Diver, loved it, and volunteered, again and again.

Character Quote: "Dirt Diver is the kind of pilot that measures altitude bye inches, not feet."

Oh goody, I'm not entirely crazy then.

Well, here's as over-the-top as I could come up with.

Codename: Grasscutter
First and Last Name: Sonja Watchet
Birthplace: US Embassy, West Germany.
Primary Specialty: Military Intelligence
Secondary Specialty: Special Recon
Military Grade: O-4 (Major)
Character Bio: Grasscutter’s family has a long history of not only military service but involvement in intelligence and covert activities reaching back some two centuries across three continents with distinguished service in every significant global conflict. Her career was preordained, a destiny that a life time of familial indoctrination saw her fully embrace. Keenly intelligent, able to pass herself as one of half a dozen ethnicities and frequently finding herself chafing against the institutional limitations placed on her due to her gender, she found herself directed into Military Intelligence where she eventually wound up as part of the highly classified Intelligence Support Activity during its Gray Fox phase in Afghanistan.
But even though she won the right to enter the field as part of The Activity — as close to Special Forces training as she could get in service to her homeland — it wasn’t enough to satisfy either her own belief that she could be better, or the belief of others that she couldn’t. To that end she tapped a number of family resources and a decade’s worth of contacts in the Intelligence community to get the training she couldn’t at home. Training ranging from clearance diving to the basics required for orbital EVAs.
It was exactly this sort of intense inner drive that made her perfect material for the Unit. That drive is reflected in everything she says and does, but not to the exclusion of everything. She knows how to have fun, knows how to smile. But losing her husband to the enemy means she also knows how to be sad... and very very angry.
Character Quote: They’ll be along any day now. And we’ll have a refreshing six-pack of kick-ass ready for them.

Grasscutter (Special NPC — 220 XP): Init V; Atk V; Def VII; Res VI; v/wp VI; Competence VIII; Wealth VI; Skills: Analysis VII, Cultures VI, Notice VI, Sneak VII, Tactics V.
Weapons: H&K Mk. 23 (dmg 1d12 lethal, error 1, threat 19-20, ammo 12M4, range 30 ft., qualities: UPG (multi-mode laser sight, removable suppressor), BLK, CMP, RGD, TBR, TKD). Survival Knife (dmg 1d6+2 lethal, error 1, threat 19-20, qualities: UPG (custom handle, razor sharp), AP (1), BLD, KEN (4)). Thompson M1928 (dmg 1d12 lethal, error 1-3, threat 19-20, ammo 30M4, range 35 ft., qualities: UPG (advanced combat sight, patrol sling, threaded barrel, removable suppressor), DEP, RGD, TKD).
Gear: Encrypted Headset (cal V), Experimental stealth suit (cal II Media-Safe gadget, call II Sensor Mask gadget (heat & motion), cal III Silence gadget).
Vehicle: Trained in a variety of airborne and aquatic insertion techniques, she has also earned flight licenses for both rotary and fixed-wing service craft. Will only ride pillion on a motorcycle under extreme duress. Her pride and joy however is a customized cherry red Gran Torino inherited from her late husband.
Qualities: aquatic, class ability (Bright Idea, Human Nature, Intercept Communication, Keen, Magnetism ~ Backup I, Master of Camouflage, Bright Idea, Perfect Cover, Spotter I, Usual Suspects I), extended training (Cultures ~ Eastern Europe, North Africa, Southern Asia, South America, Western Asia; Proficiencies ~ Exotic Hurled, Explosive, Guided, Hurled, Rifle), feat (Change of Plans, Escape & Evasion Training, Faceless, Forensic Genius, Martial Arts (Intelligence), Night Training, Traceless, Unfamiliar Territory, Urban Training, World Traveler), henchmen, seductive, specialty (Trooper ~ Guile), story critical II, superior attribute (Str 13, Dex 13, Con 15, Int 20, Wis 14, Cha 12), talented (Determined).

Well, here's my first entry. I hope to have a information and electronic warefare specialist done by the deadline.

Codename: Hammer
First and Last Name: Lucas Pritchard
Birthplace: Carlisle, Pennsylvannia
Primary Specialty: Tank Gunner
Secondary Specialty: Tank Commander
Military Grade: E-7 (Sergeant First Class)
Character Bio: As the old saying goes, when all you have is a Hammer, everything looks like a nail. For Lucas Pritchard though, everything looks like a problem that can be solved through the careful application of a main battle tank.

Hammer was an Army brat from a long line of cavalry and armor soldiers. He spent time all over the world surrounded by tankers and mechanized infantry. It was forgone conclusion that when he graduated high school he was headed for the recruiting station and armor school. He earned a reputation as a capable and steadfast tactician and an exceptional gunner capable of squeezing every last bit of performance out of his tank. He also earned a reputation for bringing tanks back to the depot held together by duct, tape, bubblegum, and existential fear of disappointing him. After several tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, he was recruited for the Unit.

Hammer doesn't love combat, but he understands it's necessity and embraces his role in it. He understands the need to put ordinance on target and keeping his tank, his crew, and his infantry support safe. Any enemy AFV in the field is a threat and his rightful prey. He steadfastly refuses to use a weapon with a bore smaller then half an inch if has a choice in the matter. On duty, he's quiet, taciturn, and professional. Off duty he's boisterous, jovial, and tends to forget he doesn't have a tank wrapped around him. He can usually be found in the enlisted club or putting some light (read smaller then a tank) vehicle back together after it failed to live up to his demands.
Character Quote (Optional): "FIRING!" BOOM!

Hammer (Special NPC — 210 XP): Init VII; Atk IX; Def VII; Resilience VII; v/wp: VI; Competence: V Skills: Drive VIII, Mechanics VIII, Notice VII, Tactics VIII
Weapons:  Benelli M4 Super 90 (dmg 2d12 lethal, error 1-2, threat 19-20, ammo 8S40, range 30 ft., qualities CLS, IMP, TKD), Beretta 92 (dmg 1d10, error 1-2, threat 20, ammo 15M4, range 25 ft., qualities -), Bofors AT4 CS HEAT x2 (dmg 2d10 (AP 40) explosive, error 1-3, threat 19-20, ammo 1S1, range 50 ft., qualities BLS (5 ft.), INA (–15), ONE)
Gear: Modular Tactical Vest w/ Personal Tailoring and Modern Ballistic Helmet), Mechanics Kit I
Vehicle: Armored Fighting Vehicles, the heavier the better.

Okay.  Search and recovery NPC.  1 of 3 coming out of my skull tonight.  Next up... boat sinker and.. well... I'm not sure how to sum up number 3.... yet.

-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/

Codename:  Archangel
First and Last Name: Michael Kincade
Birthplace: Cambridge, Massachusetts
Primary Specialty:  Pararescueman (1T2X1)
Secondary Specialty: Combat Rescue Officer (13DXA)
Military Grade: Captain, O-3 United States Air Force
Character Bio: ‘Archangel’.  Also known as Michael Kincade.  Ten year veteran of the United States Air Force.  Enlisted at the age of 18 and signed on for the Pararescue training course.  One out of seven in his wing of thirty to graduate the course.  Excelled in Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE) training.  Known for his ability to track a downed soldier or pilot for miles in order to bring them home, and for that matter, track his enemies movements so he can get his charge home...
Used every moment of his downtime to complete a Bachelor’s Degree in Emergency Medicine (Paramedic).  With his degree in hand, ‘Archangel’ applied to and was accepted into Officer Training School.  Graduating near the top of his class, Michael was commissioned as a Combat Rescue Officer, leading a small unit of six Airmen under the direction of the Air Force Special Operations Command (AFSOC).  Nicknamed “The Seraphim”, the unit of seven is highly regarded, and well respected, for their life endangering missions deep into hostile or unknown territories to recover injured or lost comrades.
While not as combat oriented as others under his command, Archangel uses his advanced SERE training to limit his exposure to hostile forces.  That’s not saying he can’t drop a target from 100 meters, he just prefers NOT to have all the eyes on him.  He enjoys leaving that to the Marines.
Awarded the Air Force Cross, Defense Superior Service Medal and Aerial Achievement Medal for a mission involving a wounded member of State who had gotten himself shot in the wrong part of the world, a fully functional C-17 and ‘Archangel’ jumping out of it.  …with a parachute, of course.
Never married, with no kids, ‘Archangel’s job is his life.  He doesn’t argue the point…
Character Quote:  “Find ‘em.  Bring ‘em home.”

I don't use the NPC system too often, so this is good practice.

Codename: Brimstone
Name: John Alexander Smith
Birthplace: Bethesda, Maryland
Primary Specialty: Special Forces (18A)
Secondary Specialty: Military Intelligence (All Source Intelligence, 35D)
Military Grade: Brigadier General (O-7)

His grandfather fought both in WW2 and Korea, and his great grandfather fought in the First World War. John attended the West Point and graduated in the top five percent of his class. Athletic, he was with the Black Knights when they won the Commander in Chief’s Trophy in 1988.
His first war was the Gulf War where he was assigned as a liaison to the legendary British commander Sir Peter de la Billičre, second in command of the Coalition forces. After the Gulf War John attended Special Forces training. In the late 90’s he served as an exchange officer with the SAS. In 2000 he was posted as a military attaché to the embassy in London. This posting was cut short by the events of 9/11. He was among the first US forces in Afghanistan, later co-coordinating operations with the SAS. In 2003 he returned back to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Since then he has been back to both countries. Two of three.  Underwater ship sinker and some infiltration.

-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-/-

Codename:  Dragon
First and Last Name: Takeshi Yoshida
Birthplace: Hanapepe, Kauai (Hawaii)
Primary Specialty: SEAL: Underwater Demolitions
Secondary Specialty: SEAL:  Jump Master
Military Grade: E5, Petty Officer Second Class United States Navy
Character Bio: Born to a pair of Japanese immigrants living on the island of Kauai in Hawaii, Takeshi is an Issei, able to speak both Japanese and English.  A proud student of Wing Chun since his young childhood, Takeshi demonstrates an impressive ability to use unorthodox angles and speed to disable an opponent.  After a typical teenage stint of rebellion, Takeshi decided to honor his parents and himself by joining the Navy.
With a long history of martial arts with him, Takeshi attended the S.E.A.L. program to live up to being ‘the best he that knew he was’.  Limping through BUD/S with what would later to be discovered as a severely hyper extended knee, Takeshi earned his nickname ‘The Dragon’ for his ferocity when injured and his more than adequate ability to make things explode.

Assigned to SEAL team 4, Takeshi Yoshida, excelling at underwater munitions and structure demolition, is a one-man demolition team wreaking havoc on enemy ship yards and port garrisons.  Typically the ‘diversion’, the ‘Dragon’ is no stranger to working alone in the dark, trying to make something blow up in dramatic fashion in order to buy his team a chance to get where they need to be.  The 'Dragon' is no stranger being 'dropped on his head' from 30,000 feet (a.k.a. HALO jumping) and swimming the rest of the way to his target.

Yoshida’s crowning achievement, and something he will never let any of his teammates forget, was the single handed scuttling of a dry-dock, destroyer in said dry dock, and the facility crane attached to the dry dock all in one glorious explosion.  …he has the image of the aftermath saved to his iPhone as wallpaper…

Character Quote: “One artificial reef, coming right up!”

Dragon (Special NPC — 130 XP):
Init VII; Atk VII; Def VI; Resilience IV; v/wp: V; Competence: V; Skills: (Acrobatics VI, Blend VII, Science VI, Security VII, Sneak VII);  Wealth: VIII (III,III,II);

Well, here goes my stab at a contribution. I have five more, but I need to see what you guys have not covered yet, so we could "hypothetically" cover all the bases for our Unit [thus, increase my chances at having at least one selected Wink] and fine tune them so they enhance your NPCs and round up the Unit.

Always open to suggestions and nitpicking!  Grin

=======================================
Codename: Fireheart.
First and Last Name: Blake Yuen.
Birthplace: Santa Clara, California.
Primary Specialty: Infantry: Demolitions/EDD.
Secondary Specialty: Electronics Expert.
Military Grade: E-9 (Sergeant Major).
Character Bio: Life in Santa Clara was nice, maybe too nice. Blake loves his family and has always had their support. After skipping to grades and a straight A’s run in elementary, junior and high schools, he went on to study Electronics Engineering at Stanford University. He breezed through school as he always had even though he wasn’t considered of genius-level. Ending college at 19, he was faced with a sense of misplacement and a nagging feeling of untapped potential that wouldn’t let him sleep on certain nights. His grades assured he would receive scholarships should he choose to continue furthering his education on postgraduate studies. Yet, his dad knew that was not what his son would choose first. After a serious talk with his old man and one of his oldest friends, Blake was sure the Army could use his skills and that he could carve a place for himself there. His mother was unsure about his decision, but supported him nonetheless. Blake’s younger sisters, the “Terror Twins” as he affectionately called them, just asked him if he would come back to visit often, and he promised he would as much as possible.

For the first time in his life, Blake had to struggle to keep up, which gave him both feelings of elation and fear, yet he kept his spirits as high as possible even when the Drill Sergeant seemingly enjoyed pummeling them down to the floor every single day. Blake kept a cool head, mastered his fears, worked ever harder, and prevailed. After Basic Training was over, ol’ Clyde “Stoneface” Kapinski called him to his office and congratulated him. “You made me and you father proud, son. Hope you did not mind my pushing you that hard. But if I didn’t I would have pay a disservice to your pappy. Now, go back home, rest for a bit, tell him I kept my word, and give your mother and sisters my regards.”

Blake did and soon after his break, he was shipped to Iraq along with his unit: the 9th Infantry Regiment 1st Battalion. During his tour of duty, an incident with an IED during one of his patrol rounds and his electronics background laid the foundation for his training as part of the Demolition team. His skills saved many lives, both civil and those of his companions and fellow soldiers, and earned him various commendations and a merit award: the Distinguished Service Cross for disabling a bomb place in a public bus during an engagement with enemy forces and under heavy fire, saving the lives of his fellow squad members and 30 civilians.

One night, not too long after he returned home and was ready to volunteer for another tour of duty, Stoneface Kapinski came calling on his family’s doorstep: “Evening to you all, Yuens. Hope I am not interrupting one of your famous grilled chicken dinners.” As soon as Blake asked his sisters to set another place at the table while his dad was done hugging and joking with his old friend, Sgt. Kapinski pulled Blake aside and whispered:  “Son, I’ve got news for you about a whole new destination if you think you can handle it, and shut your yap about the whole thing…”

Quote: “Once I’m done with this ‘bomb’, we’ll be able to use the pieces to enhance our broadband signal and finally get uninterrupted digital tv signal.”

Fireheart (Special NPC — 132 XP): Init V; Atk V; Def VII; Res V; v/wp V; Competence VI; Wealth VII; Skills: Electronics VI, Extended Training V, Prodigy VI, Notice VI, Security VI, Mechanics V.

Weapons: Colt M4A1 (4d4 lethal, error 1-3, threat 20, ammo 30M5 or 100D1, range 125 ft., qualities: UPG (removable suppressor, patrol sling), CLS). Colt M1911A1 (dmg 1d12 lethal, error 1, threat 19-20, ammo 12M4, range 30 ft., qualities: DEP, TKD). Survival Knife (dmg 1d6+2 lethal, error 1, threat 19-20, qualities: UPG (custom handle, razor sharp), AP (1), BLD, KEN (4)).

Gear: Bomb sniffer, mil. (cal IV), GPS Unit, mil. (cal IV), Modular Tactical Armour (Cal III), qualities: UPG (Helmet, ballistic modern, trauma plates).

Vehicle: ---.

Qualities: camouflaged, class ability (Fortunes of War II, Armor Use III, Portable Cover, One in a Million), extended training (Electronics, Demolitions, ED disposal); Proficiencies ~ Explosive, Guided, Rifle, Service pistol), feat (Battle Hardened, Explosive Basics, Fire-team Mastery, Extra Gear (electronics), Electronic Warrior, Silver Spoon), superior attribute (Con 15, Int 18, Wis 15), techie.

Time to blow out some cobwebs and brush up on my NPC'ing skills. This character is loosely based on a high school friend, if anyone has doubts about the back story.

Codename: Taniwha
First and Last Name: Dave McBride
Birthplace: Casper, Wyoming
Primary Specialty: Maritime Security
Secondary Specialty: Search and Rescue
Military Grade: 0-3 (U.S. Coast Guard Lieutenant)
Character Bio: Growing up in Casper, Wyoming would not normally predispose one to a life on the water, so it was fortunate that McBride left before he had even begun school.

His parents met at a sales conference and it was love at first sight. They were engaged and married soon after, and nine months later Dave was born. A few years later, his father decided that America was becoming too unsafe for his young family and decided to move them to his hometown of Auckland, New Zealand. It was a huge change for Dave's mother, but they both decided it would be the best thing for their son.

So, instead of growing up in the middle of the America, Dave spent his formative years in a small house which backed onto Takapuna Beach. He spent much of his free time either on or in the water, and quickly developed a taste for piloting all manner of nautical craft. So stong was this liking that he decided that it was what he wanted to do forever.

Weighing up his options, he decided that a military career would be the most exciting option. He wasn't interested in the Navy, their ships were far too big and he much preferred the feel of smaller craft. The other option was the Coast Guard, but they were more focussed on search and rescue than anything else. As luck would have it, his American birth also meant he was able to apply for the United States Coast Guard. It wouldn't be easy, but Dave spent every possible moment working towards the goal.

His hard work paid off and Dave was accepted into the Coast Guard Academy. He continued to study hard and graduated top in his class. He was then assigned to the base in Miami, Florida, where he served on board Cutters on missions against drug runners and search and rescue operations. Again he managed to excel, and even developed a reputation for being especially agressive when it command of a vehicle, to the point of engaging in games of chicken against ciminals. This reputation is what got him noticed by The Unit, who recognized his particular skills as something that could be put to good use.

Character Quote: "It's not the size of the ship, mate, it's what you do with it."
