Ever wanted to see your work in a Spycraft product? Now, you just might with our Create a Hero contest! We’re looking for a few good characters to join a military team in a Spycraft PDF to be released in the next few weeks!

To enter the contest, create a hero in the following format and post it to this thread. Characters should be in the American military and over-the-top in the style of 1980s action films and cartoons. Only character options from Spycraft 2.0 and World on Fire are valid. Beyond that, the sky’s the limit! Be creative and have fun!

Winners will be selected by the Crafty Games staff and receive an Additional Material credit in the final product, plus a free copy of the PDF when it’s released. Time is of the essence — to be eligible, all submissions must be made by midnight (PST) on Sunday, July 19!

Entries must be formatted in the style of a Spycraft 2.0 special NPC stat block, including the following information and format (you can quote this message and delete the text above to keep formatting, if you like). Replace all bracketed text with the actual values, options, or information.

Codename:
First and Last Name:
Birthplace:

Military Grade: [Pay grade and name — see http://www.militaryfactory.com/ranks/index.asp]
Character Bio: [250–400 words describing the character’s background, personality, history, training, and other interesting facts. Feel free to mention any real-world events you wish.]
Character Quote (Optional): [Quote by or about the character — 25 words or less]

Gear: [list the character’s gear — no more than 3–4 key items]
Vehicle: [Do not include specific vehicles — just suggestions for the *types* of vehicle the character might pilot or drive]
Qualities: [Full names, separated by commas. Follow feat, talented, and specialty with parentheses containing the chosen option(s)]

The Legal Stuff
By entering this contest, you relinquish any and all ownership of the creation, making it the exclusive property of Crafty Games, which shall be free to sell, reproduce, use, disclose, display, exhibit, transmit, transform, expand upon, and redistribute without limitation or obligation. Winning entries will be selected at Crafty Games’ sole discretion. Authors of winning entries will be contacted through the Crafty Games bulletin boards — entrants must have a valid email address registered and respond to the initial contact within 48 hours to remain eligible for inclusion in the product. If your work is accepted publication in the product, you will receive an Additional Material credit and one (1) copy of the PDF, to be distributed through DriveThruRPG, without further compensation.

As a point of order, things like Weapons and Gear ask for "key" or "suggested" stuff. How should we figure their xp value? As though the character had all that stuff (some of which will vary in caliber), or just not include xp value for weapons, gear, or vehicles in the character's xp total?

Include the XP value for all equipment, as if you were building the NPC normally. "Key" in this case was to emphasize a character should not be toting 15 different gear picks - these heroes should have character-defining equipment only, rather than a full PC-styled loadout. Smiley Vehicles are suggestions only, and should add no XP value - saying "This guy flies attack helicopters" is good enough for us to carry other parts of the product over ourselves.

I'll tackle one:

Codename: Marshal
First and Last Name: Cheyenne Brogan
Birthplace: Panama City, Florida
Primary Specialty: Military Police
Secondary Specialty: Drill Instructor
Military Grade: E-7 (Gunnery Sergeant)
Character Bio: Panama City is a spring break destination for alcoholic college kids throughout the southeast, and Marshal grew up loathing the chaos his hometown cultivated. His parents, permissive hippie beachcombers, gave little support to his desires for some order, and when they refused to support his college aspirations (on the grounds that doing so would only “make him a drone”), he moved out and never looked back.

After a year at Florida State studying criminology with an eye toward  police work, his tuition grant money ran out. Fortunately, at about that time the local Marine recruiter came knocking, and sold him on both the G.I. bill and the merits of practical policing experience. Marshal enlisted just in time to accompany a USMC MP unit into Saudi Arabia for Operation Desert Shield.

Over the course of his career, Marshal proved himself a relentless investigator and dogged keeper of the peace. The pile of commendations in his jacket put him on the short list for a number of choice assignments. He opted for The Unit based on their promise of helping bring order out of the chaos of the world's hotspots. Marshal oversees The Unit's physical base security and directs the training of its security personnel. He is a proven expert in his ability to protect an installation against intrusion.

His jacket can make Marshal out as a zealous ramrod. He does not waver in his attention to regulations, and his spit-shined razor-creased style makes him the bane of laggards, slackers, and duty-dodgers everywhere. That said, Marshal has even less patience with organizational inefficiency, and works to create the most efficient system possible regarding The Unit's security--when needed he willingly works to relax or alter regulations that impede The Unit's mission.

Marshal maintains top-level fitness in every duty area, and this can make him a fearsome instructor either on the parade ground or the obstacle course. The mere words “Marine Drill Sergeant” conjure fear in many, and the sight of Marshal's campaign hat in the gray pre-dawn of a PT field does nothing to ease this fear. His bearing and demeanor also make him a dangerous man to challenge, and it is widely held that he's impossible to lie to.

Oddly, he relaxes off duty by cooking. He is known for grilling a mean steak, and many Unit members try and sneak through the security office when word gets around that Marshal brought cupcakes.

Quote: Unit Recruit Gonzalo Chavez says: “I thought I was tough—all state track, college football, some tae kwon do, the works. Then I did PT with Marshal. Lemme tell you, I'll sleep better at night knowing Marshal's got The Unit's back.”

Marshal (Special NPC — 137 XP): Init V; Atk VII; Def IV; Res VII; v/wp VII; Competence VIII; Wealth III; Skills: Athletics VII, Intimidate VII, Notice V, Resolve X, Security VI.
Weapons: Remington 870P (dmg 5d4 subdual, error 1, threat 20, ammo 7S40 (non-lethal), range 30 ft., qualities: DEP, DST, IMP, TKD), Colt M1911A1 (dmg 1d12 lethal, error 1, threat 19-20, ammo 7M7, range 25 ft., qualities: DEP, TKD), Heavy Flashlight (as light club, dmg 1d6+1 subdual, error 1, threat 20, qualities: none)
Gear: Utility duty uniform, Tactical vest, ballistic helmet, tactical radio PR 7, handcuffs.
Vehicle: Base patrol vehicle (whatever is appropriate, from a patrol car to an FAV).
Qualities: class ability (Cold Read, Human Nature), damage resistance VIII (flash), feat (Boxing Basics, Club Basics, Tac-Squad Basics, Tactical Advantage, This...is my Boomstick!, Observer, Officer, Vital Points Basics, Private Eye), henchman, superior attribute (Str +4, Con +6, Cha +2), talented (Vigilant).

The mere words “Marine Drill Sergeant” conjure fear in many, and the sight of Marshal's Marine 8-point cover in the gray pre-dawn of a PT field does nothing to ease this fear.

For what it's worth, the evocative hat for USMC drill sergeants is the campaign hat (aka "Smokey Bear"). The 8-point is a utility cover for use with the combat uniform, and looks vaguely like a baseball cap.

A slightly less villainous/more heroic version of the first "'80s military cartoon" character I thought of (guess who).

IANAS (I Am Not A Soldier), so I don't know if my background/personality is too unrealistic, but he was fun to write up.   Grin

   Codename: Janos
First and Last Name: Milosh Kaya.  Several known aliases: Miles Kavendish, Mel Kandrian, Kyle Marsh, etc.
   Birthplace: Ankara, Turkey.
   Primary Specialty: Intelligence – HUMINT.
Secondary Specialty: Native Language Speaker – Eastern European languages.
Military Grade: Corporal (E-4).  Reduced in rank due to disciplinary issues.
Character Bio: Milosh Kaya grew up in Turkey, and claims that larceny is in his veins, a part of his purported Gypsy ancestry.  He joined a theatrical troupe as a teenager and toured Europe and the United States, but was forced to leave behind his successful career after a drunken brawl with another actor over a woman at a post-wrap party.  After learning “the art of the con” on the road, on the run from the law, he settled into a successful series of white collar jobs on the West Coast, claiming over a dozen aliases and pocketing thousands (if not millions) in embezzled funds before being arrested, and choosing to serve his country after a short prison sentence.
Milosh is 5' 8" tall, 178 lbs., with a slightly swarthy complexion, dark brown eyes and dark brown, curley hair.  He speaks several Eastern European languages fluently.  He is proficient with most small arms, and a passable hand-to-hand combatant, but his real skill is in infiltration and subterfuge.  He is known to have a living aunt in Turkey, as well as a brother and sister living in New York.  He frequently watches classic films of all genres, and has two pets, a Persian cat named "Gene" and a parrot named "Judy".
Janos is a masterful con man; almost too untrustworthy to consider for a unit such as (unit), an intense personal loyalty to (unit commander) makes him a valued member.  Janos possesses the uncanny ability to duplicate peoples' mannerisms, speech patterns, even their thought patterns and attitudes.  Janos can fit into any company, get anything for his unit for a reasonable price through barter, and his practical joker streak helps him make a fool of anyone he can't manage to befriend.  Janos seems to thrive in the structure and discipline of military life, giving his existence a meaning it had totally lacked before.  Janos seems uncomfortable talking about himself and his past, the hearts and lives his deception had left shattered, finding it easier to adopt yet another “role” than to confront the questionable things he's done to advance his own needs and wants.
In his off hours, Milosh is a heavy drinker and womanizer.  Milosh sometimes expresses doubts about the United States' role in recent world events.  Whether this is genuine concern, a displacement of his feelings of guilt, or a build-up to a “role” as a double-agent (or triple-agent!), is hard to say.  No one but he can say what face Janos will present to the world next.

Character Quote: “They say I am a man of a thousand faces.  I say that they are off by one gender, and a factor of ten.”

Janos (Special NPC — 94 XP): Init V; Atk IV; Def VI; Resilience III; v/wp: V; Competence: VI; Skills: Blend VIII, Bluff IX, Falsify IX, Impress VII, Networking VII; SZ M; Spd 30 ft; Wealth: II; Weapons: 1 × Caliber I; Gear: 2 × Caliber I ; Forgery Kit I, Low-Profile Armor Trendy)
Weapons: H&K Mk. 23 “SOCOM” (dmg 1d12, error 1, threat 19–20, ammo 12M4, range 30 ft., qualities BLK, CMP, RGD, TBR, TKD).
Gear: Disguise Kit III, Forgery Kit I, Lockpick Kit I, Low-Profile Armor (Trendy).
Vehicle: Any vehicle fitting to his current “role”.
Qualities: Qualities: class ability (1000 faces, masks), feat (Actor, Flawless Identity, Hustler, Polyglot, Quick Draw).

Curse you, Crafty! Now I've got to make myself go to bed or I'll be doing this 'til dawn!

Codename: Flea
First and Last Name: Jean La Bauve
Birthplace: Dulac, Louisiana
Primary Specialty: Fire Support Specialist
Secondary Specialty: Infantry
Military Grade: E-4 (Specialist)
Character Bio: The bayou country of Louisiana is generally populated by dirt-poor hopelessly undereducated welfare cases who wouldn't have it any other way. The local Cajun population has little use for the rest of the world's high-falutin' ways anyhow, and Flea grew up loving nothing more than hunting in the wetlands around his home with his brothers, sometimes living for weeks on whatever they shot, fished, or trapped. He squeaked through high school largely because his girlfriend made him, and at her urging joined the army to look tough.

Tough wasn't a word that would have described Flea back then. Standing 5 feet tall in his boots, and weighing barely 100 pounds, he barely met the Army's basic physical requirements, and struggled to put on the muscle required of an infantryman. When his girlfriend dumped him just after basic training, however, he threw himself body and soul behind the Army's physical fitness program, largely to prove to himself that he could be tough on his own.

He attacked his duties as an infantryman with equal fervor, and his determination earned him a slot at Sniper school, Fort Benning. After completion of that course and a stint in survival school, his unit commander recommended he cross train as a field artillery forward observer. Flea found this duty perfect—long hours hiding in the wilderness, and opportunities to practice the self-sufficiency skills he'd learned as a youth. And if anyone found him out in the bush, well, he'd show 'em how tough a flea could be.

Flea has an almost symbiotic relationship with wildernesses, and is capable of living (and living well) on flora and fauna that many wouldn't even consider edible. In the wild or out, he maintains a punishing physical fitness regimen that has turned him into just over 100 pounds of thoroughbred muscle. This overall readiness for duty anywhere at any time brought him to the attention of The Unit, and they seemed like his kind of tough guys.

Quote: “Get small in them trenches, boys. I got 2000 pounds a' napalm droppin' right in front o' y'all's line. Smells like Barbecue tonight!”

Flea (Special NPC — 134 XP): Init IV; Atk VII; Def V; Res VII; v/wp VII; Competence VII; Wealth III; Skills: Acrobatics V, Athletics V, Sneak VIII, Survival VIII, Tactics VIII.
Weapons: Remington M24 SWS (dmg 3d6+2 lethal, error 1, threat 19-20, ammo 5S50 (.300 Winchester), range 250 ft., qualities: ACC, MAC (-2), UPG (10x telescopic day/night sight)), FN Browning High-Power w/removable suppressor (dmg 1d10+1 lethal, error 1, threat 20, ammo 13M4 (9mmP), range 25 ft., qualities: DEP), Survival Knife (dmg 1d6+1 lethal, error 1, threat 19-20, qualities: AP (1), BLD)
Gear: Ghillie Suit, Laser Designator, Military GPS, Encrypted Headset Radio PR 5, Indirect Strike PR 5.
Vehicle: Flea is used to hiking or parachuting into wherever he's needed.
Qualities: class ability (All Over the World, Eagle Eye, Evasion I, Rough Living, Stalker), feat (Bombard, Guided Weapon Basics, Guts, Knife Basics, Survivalist), specialty (Special Ops—bonus feat: Ambush Basics), superior attribute (Str +4, Dex +6, Con +4, Int +2).

I totally knew that. I just brain farted it, largely because I find the 8-point cover immensely cool.  Smiley  I would totally wear one instead of a regular ballcap if I thought I could get away with it (any marines out there? Can an ordinary overweight civilian gamer get away with wearing an 8-point from the surplus store?).

Either way I've modified Marshal accordingly.

Bear in mind my own lack of experience with the US military.

     Codename: Topkick
First and Last Name: Patrick Creed
     Birthplace: Des Moines, Iowa
     Primary Specialty: CQB Specialist
     Secondary Specialty: Infantry
     Military Grade: O-4 (Major)
Character Bio: Major Creed is a career military man, and at 42 years old has been in the Army for nearly 25 years. He’s served through every major engagement of the last two decades, and has turned down promotions that would take him away from the front lines and his men. He’s a natural leader, but as the years have rolled on his temperament hasn’t exactly improved - he has become more and more frustrated with the detachment of command from the troops, and his vocal outbursts have resulted in a number of reprimands.
After a botched attack on a fortified Taliban position in Afghanistan the unit that he was leading suffered horrendous casualties. Creed blamed his superiors, and after an attempt to force an inquiry for the debacle he was threatened with being court-martialled. Seeing that those responsible were going to get away with it without even saying sorry, he took justice into his own hands, shooting and killing a Major General. He is currently rotting in a cell in a military prison, awaiting execution. The Major is an extremely skilled close-quarter combatant, holding several local boxing titles in his youth. He’s a master of martial arts, and is well known for fighting dirty.
Creed stands at 6’4” and weighs about 240lbs. He keeps his head clean-shaven, and his body is devoid of tattoos and piercing. His skin is rough and tan from spending so long outdoors, and he rarely smiles, although those who know him well realise that he has a strange sense of humour and a dark mischievous streak in him. After so many years in the military he’s proficient with nearly every weapon that the Army has to offer and a few that they don’t.
Having no family, Creed rarely spends time amongst civilians – he regards them to be mostly lazy and undisciplined. His off hours are spent in libraries or movie theatres, and he has a love of good stories. Now that he is in prison, he spends most of his free time working out. He’s repeatedly been involved in violent confrontations during his incarceration, as many of the men that he is locked up with have authority issues and see him as a whipping boy to take out their frustrations. Never being one to take that sort of thing lying down, he’s happy to send the disgruntled troops to the infirmary with a number of broken bones as company.
Character Quote: “I’m not part of this man’s army anymore – now leave me alone.”

TOPKICK (Special NPC — 129 XP): Init VI; Atk VIII; Def VI; Res VI; v/wp VI; Competence VI; Wealth V; Skills: Athletics V, Notice V, Sneak V, Tactics VII.
Weapons: Colt M4A1 (dmg 4d4 lethal, error 1-3, threat 20, ammo 30M5, range 100 ft., qualities: collapsible stock)
Survival Knife (dmg 1d6+4, error 1, threat 19-20, qualities: Armour-Piercing 1, Bleed)
Unarmed (dmg 2d6+3 lethal, error 1, threat 19-20)
Gear (before incarceration): Colt M4A1 Assault Rifle, Headset Radio (PR 2), Modular Tactical Armour (vest + guards), Survival Knife
Vehicle: Whatever he’s issued with.
Qualities: class ability (Pointman: Lead (3/session), Orders II, Soldier: Armour Use II, Fortunes of War I), feat (Battle Hardened, Combat Instincts, Dirty Fighting Moves, Hardcore, Martial Arts (Strength)), superior attribute (Strength 16, Constitution 16, Charisma 14), talented (Grizzled).

More of an archetype. You could write a "historical" character (this unit's history goes back to the 60's), but this is a modern-day product.
