What are some of your favorite 3.5 classes?
« on: May 15, 2009, 06:50:36 PM »
I have most of the WotC 3.5 library on my shelf, but rarely got to play. What were some of your favorite prestige classes? I'm thinking about adapting a couple for my own amusement.

Some of the truly coolest to me weren't WotC at all, like some classes in Bruce Cordell's Hyperconscious supplement (like the Astral Zealot, Crystal Proselyte, and Chakra Savant.)

But of WotC fare? Hmmm... daggerspell shaper and daggerspell mage (complete adventurer) and initiate of the sevenfold veil (complete arcanist) or two I remember (it'd been a while since I played.)

Of the WotCs?  I'm going with Spellsword.

Well, the only two I ever got to seriously play around with were the Bladesinger and the Shadow Dancer and I enjoyed both of those, but they're sorta trivial in Spycraft from what it looks like.

Dragonmark Heir was the only prestige class I ever got to play (a big chunk of character progression for the character was taken up with levels in weretiger, a prudent move given one of the big bads was a dire werewolf). The Master Inquisitive also looked interesting, but the game just never went anywhere where it would have been a practical class.

The problem is that generally WotC tend to make rather dull classes. For all their myriad base classes the only two that ever held any attraction were Ranger and Thief

None of the 3.5 prestige classes have ever held my interest, but my tastes in 3.5 are questionable: I play light armored fighters, which means I tend to suck. :)  My ranger completed Tempest for the two-weapon benefits, and I currently have a scout early in Order of the Bow Initiate, which might as well be a five level class.   I'm far more interested in a swashbuckler conversion, or the upcoming Trickster to convert my beguiler to *Craft.  Oh, and I thought the various dragon blood feats for sorcerers were cool, and it would have been awesome if Dragon Disciple was as cool as its concept, or at least rose above 'steaming pile' mechanically.

(If there's one thing I'd like to smack a 3.x designer for, it's 2 skill points a level for smacky uppy classes.  Or for any class, really, but the whole "you hit hard so you don't need skills" theory is so stupid it hurts.)

- Archmage
- Guild Thief
- Shadow Dancer (when playing NWN or NWN2)
- Harper Mage

I'll second this, if only because I had a friend build a Halfling Outrider with a velociraptor mount, and that level of awesome needs to be brought into as many systems as possible.   ;D

I like the Extreme Explorer and Eldeen Ranger from the Eberron Campaign Setting (most of the Prestige classes in that book were pretty good IMO). Five nations also had a Knight Phantom and Dark Lantern that where interesting.

From the 3.5 Wotc splat books none really leap out from my memory - but lightly armored warriors, rogue (non-magic) specialisations, and racially themed classes in general did appeal to me more.  From the earlier 3.0 splat books I remember liking the Ghostwalker** and the Ooze-master.

**Ghostwalker wasn't really supernatural - it was like Clint Eastwood or Conan taking a smashing at the hands of the bad guys then coming back a second time to serve back to them.

i allways like some of the complete adventurer classes, and think that either bloodhound, or vigilante would go great with spycraft.

*Chuckle* I should have folks indicate which book it's from too. I have so many tracking a single class down can be a little crazy :).
