Quick question, y'all - what would you call political fantasy, like Birthright and A Song of Fire and Ice?

I'm tempted to say Courtroom Fantasy, but it doesn't sound quite right.

You could do the sound for L&O by using a combination of skulls for drums & an instrument that sounds like you are sodomizing a cat (aka the bagpipe, per Robin William's description).

I always just called it Military Political Fantasy.

I loved Birthright. I had some long term plotlines that actually had time to mature, including a major war. One PC had the bloodline of Azrai - and played politics with a great deal of enthusiasm,  cutting deals with all the other PCs. Then there was El Hadid, an NPC who's alignment kept slipping for the better, and who ended up getting domains faster than he could assimilate them.

Part of the fun was a goblin refugee, the paladin gave him a small domain, and then spent several years in perpetual face palm mode. The goblin wasn't evil, just enthusiastic good. Tongue Politically embarrassing, but fighting the good fight. This eventually spun off what came to be known as the Goblin Adventuring Party - A.K.A. The Flying Green Garbanzo Brothers....

Military Political Fantasy is probably as good as any, though my first inclination is to call it Kingdom-Level Fantasy (or just Kingdom Fantasy), placing it between Adventuring Fantasy (which we all know and love) and Epic Fantasy (which is the "bigger than just one nation" world-saving stuff).

If it's not copyrighted, you could also call it "The Great Game", "The Game of Thrones", or "The Game of Kings".

Or something.

Sorkin Genre...

Heh, that one would involve all major discussions taking place while the players are walking through the corridors of the castle. You could even have players make the occasional skill check to keep up or avoid tripping up Cheesy

(Yes, I've been watching a LOT of The West Wing lately)

Cue L&O transition sound, followed by cries of bloody rage and the death-rattles of innocent bystanders...  Cheesy

It could be worse, it could be CSI: Fantasy. You could even preprogramme your cellphone so that every time a player makes a mildly ironic comment you could play the opening scream from 'Won't get fooled again" Wink

Well, gere-wise I'd call it High Fantasy.

Campaign style I would peg as a mix of Character level and Stratrgic  level play.

If you want to call it a genre, Strategic Fantasy works.

I never played Birthright despite being very interested, so haven't provided a suggestion. As a consumer, though, I feel free to comment on what the suggestions mean to me.

"Dynastic Fantasy" evokes multi-generational play ("sequence of powerful leaders in the same family" from wordnet.princeton.edu). I do like that name best of all that was mentioned, though.
