Thinking about Skills and Feats for Pulp.

A couple of classic abilities in the Pulp genre are Ventriloquism and Hypnotism (Mesmerism) - used by Stage Magician sleuths like Mandrake and also Doc Savage .

I guess Ventriloquism could be handled as a Feat (may be giving a bonus to Bluff/Deception when using your voice). I'm unsure whether to handle Hypnotism as a Psionic Power (Dominion) or a Feat  Huh?

Anyone have any ideas about these ?

Ventriloquism: Impress vs Notice or a synergy with Bluff depending on use.

Hypnotism: Influence check and a rationalization for Influence to synergism with Medicine.

Ok, Thanks, Mr K. I've added in a little Ventriloquism to the Zarnov PC. The PCs and he are stating up nicely a few pages back on this thread. So now I'm looking in the SC rulesbook for Swordcanes and Webleys.

At the same time I think an Aristocratic Pulp Hero should have a nice car, maybe a Rolls Royce Phantom like this:

http://classiccars.about.com/od/classiccarphotogallery/ig/RM-Auction-in-Monterey/1933-Rolls-Royce-Phantom-II-.--yr.htm

I gues the Rolls would class as a Caliber II Limo ?? Anyone out there have any preferences for Pulp motors Huh?

Was re-reading an old Doc Savage novel of mine last night (originally picked it up about 36 years ago !!! Can you believe it ??).

Anyway, one of Docs men is an expert in Geology and Archeology and another is a brilliant Lawyer. This got me wondering how these skills would work in SC. I guess they would be Interests, giving bonus to Knowledge checks ??

Speaking of the good Doc, come November, DC are doing a Doc Savage/Golden-age Batman crossover.

Excellent. Thanks. I'll keep eyes peeled for it.

Should be a real retro Gadget fest. Silken cords and grapnels or Batarangs. Utility belts or Gadget Vests. Blackout bombs.

Some interesting possiblities for interaction between the heroes. Doc tended to oppose killing of baddies but early Batman was quite happy to hurl them off roofs !!!. Both were superb detectives and scientists - ideal team up to track Weird Science Pulp baddy to his lair and defeat his death ray machine.

Maybe the good Doc was an inspiration to young Bruce Wayne, even ??

Heres a bit of info on it.

Sounds great and we get to see some other old-timers like Blackhawk (one of the inspirations for Sky Captain) in the follow up series too.

Okay. I know it's been a while since I've read a Batman comic, but he throws guys off roofs now?

He also carried around -- and used -- a .45 for a little while until editorial decided to get rid of it.

Superman too was originally less concerned with crims accidentially ganking themselves when they fought with him, and was on occasion seen hurling them into the distance with no indication of his being on the other end to break the fall before the fall broke them.

A while back in the thread I mentioned that the cover and story in an old comic (with Sopwith Camels and Giant Bats and sinister German Baddies) had inspired me with Rip Rogans past history. Looks like it inspired other people too.

Pity this character this Black Max baddie hasn't been picked up by the graphics novel crowd.

Another old-timer returns for new stories:

Reading this last night, quite good, made me want to dig out my old copies of the Avenger books and revel in nostalgia.

Reading through the FC rulesbook and came across the Beastmaster Expert Class. This looks an ideal progression for Tarzan or Phantom like PCs in Pulp games. Especially with its improved animal related abilities (Tarzan used to charge elephants through the Jungle !!!) and Totem-like abilities (Mighty is Tarzan, Lord of the Jungle !! Stronger than Lion, Faster than Cheeta !!! etc.)

So I think I'll rename the Beastlord speciality from earlier in this thread and call it Junglelord. That should avoid confusion. So now you can have a Savage Junglelord Scout Beastmaster. Awesome !!!

Heres an example of this type of PC: http://home.comcast.net/~cjh5801a/Ka-Zar.htm

Hmm... sounds a bit like an upcoming RPG called Fantastic Worlds. Great idea for a setting either way, and plenty of literary inspiration available to players and GMs.

I think I have heard of that game. :-)

Now if only the Man of Bronze could make it onto a decent DVD transfer too.
