Wow, parts of that were actually pretty good. Then parts of it were just full of fail. Like every scene with a dwarf in it. And the final 'sword fight'. Which is odd, considering how well the sword fighting was done earlier.

Also, I liked how "Forbidden Love" was Dirzzt and Cattie-Brie giving each other a sideways glance. That was pretty funny.

That wasn't too bad...

I'm still mystified as to how an entire underground species managed to get dark skin. If their "sun" is the key that thing is putting out some major radiation. I had a rather imaginative DM in college. His dark elves (drow) were pale skinned, but they would use some dark paste to cover their exposed areas when on the surface to protect themselves.

Well, the Forgotten Realms version at least used to be that they were dark skinned before they had a falling out with their surface cousins and went underground... Supposed to be coincidental... but considering their light sensitivity one would think that some pigment adaptation would have taken place as well Smiley

This is what happens when you have games written by people with little fundamental understanding of how biology and environmental adaptation works Wink

Unless the darkness of the drow soul shows through to their skin.  Black is the color of their patron deity as well, Llolth could have fiddled them through her priestesses to keep them dark.

That's about as plausible of an explanation as I've heard one. However, it's nice to see that I'm not alone in pondering the pigmentation of the Drow.

Well, in Greyhawk, iirc, it was a curse from Correlon for supporting Lloth.

Paizo went with the darkness of the soul thing though. Specifically, in Golorian Elves physical forms adapt based on their environment and attitude. Drow look the way they do because they're souls have been twisted and malformed by hate and cruelty.

It's even possible for a normal elf to become a Drow by being sufficiently hate-filled and evil.

Just to throw it in there, the Wyrmstone continuity posits that the Elves and Drow are the products of two separate Creators, one of whom was jealous of the other.

Of course, the reason for the Drow's colouration is rather more prosaic -- normal (good) elves were pale skinned tree-hugging buggers with black hair and green eyes. Naturally their polar subterranean opposites would have white hair, black skin and red eyes.

I'm sure Arneson or Gygax explained why they made the Drow black skinned and white haired somewhere, but I thought it was interesting to compare how writers ever since have attempted to explain it.
