Interesting news in the Scalzi blog about the Hugo Voter Packet. Esentially, if you get a membership in the Anticipacion convention you get to vote for the hugos, and get a Package with a lot (if not all) of the nominees books in digital format, so you can make your vote with knoledge. U have two membership options, one for the people who will go to the anticipation event, other for the peoplo who just want membership and the right to vote. But only for getting the Packet, it's well worth the price.

I very much enjoyed the book. The book is easily believable as non-fiction (it is touted as such, but who knows), but reads like fiction. It provides some interesting ideas for campaigns/sessions oriented around soft power, if that's your bag.

Rise, thread, Rise!

and with good reason...

I've just ordered a copy of "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies", which purports to fold a hefty slice of zombie violence directly into Austen's prose.  I'll see if it's readable and post here.

And indeed it is. It's a lot of fun. Ever read a "classic" in school or elsewhere and say to yourself "you know what this needs? Zombies and ninjas, that's what."? Well here ya go. Smiley  Just as the Austin prose gets totally stifling, somebody remarks about the cruel tutelage of their shaolin master, or the warrior's code comes up, or there's a full-on attack by "unmentionables" or "the sorry stricken", and then all is right with the world again.

It's worth it for the giggles.

Found a Trilogy that I like

The engineer Trilogy by K.J Parker

Book 1 Devices and Desires http://www.amazon.com/Devices-Desires-Engineer-Trilogy-Parker/dp/1841492760

It kinda reminds me of Dune without drugs or super powers. Just plain old science as the super power of choice. Very deep political and personal intrigue.

That looks cool. I'll have to check into that after I finish up "The Last Watch" the fourth and final? book of the "Night Watch" series.

Check out His Majesty's Dragon by Naomi Novik ... Napoleonic Era where there are air cavalry units comprised of dragons. Interesting read because the author loves the time period. She's a graduate of Brown University and worked on Neverwinter Nights to boot.

Do me a solid and post your thoughts on this one when you're done. I'm curious.

I'd give the Last Watch 3 out of 4 stars. I didn't love it as much as the first 3 (I am a fanboy for the series) but it held my attention all the way through. The magic system and the Twilight were explained more than any other book, and there was a good chunk of “reality is behind a curtain” stuff. I think there was one inconsistency from the first novel but it was great fun.

It’s my favorite book series of all time. The war between good an evil did not end in a victory of one side over the other, but the establishment of a bureaucracy. Now the battle has moved into deep shadow, each side knowing that if caught as an aggressor, they could face (how can I put this?) exile. And each book is a murder mystery! Top of the line.

I’d like to recommend the Night Angel Trilogy by Brett Weeks. Dark, ugly, and top of the line fantasy. The books are full of thought out characters facing difficult decisions and plenty of surprises. Don’t let the covers of the books frighten you off.

Will do it. (I just got a bit more to finish).

So far, it has become my favorite of the series. Sergei's writing has tightened up a bit and he's become more confident in detailing his action sequences.

There are a couple of great bits when Sergei has his characters approach the fourth wall as the characters describe dreams that were actual scenes from the first two movies, but not in the books.

I thought "The Last Watch" was the strongest of the Sergei's series thus far.

The language seems tighter and if you're familiar with the way he crafts his stories within the novels, the endings seem more organic. Since some in his other books seem like you're slamming on the brakes at 90 mph.

He brings in some new elements into the world of the Others and he expands upon the mythos.

If this is the final book, (The last line of the novel suggests that it may not) then it has a good ending by leaving me with wanting more. Too many times, I get to the end of a series or a book and thinking.... "Geez, I never thought this would be over."
