Hi,
this is my first post.  I recently met Alex at GenCon.  we talked for a bit while on a break from the 10,000 bullets event.  I told him of the problems my friends and I were having with DUngeons and Dragons.  it seems as though each version of DnD gets further and further away from a table top, pen and paper role playing game and becoming more like an online type game. strict roles little role playing mostly mob killing and loot.  we also had noticed a lot of problems (gaping holes) in their core rules set. which they continue to be unable or unwanting to fix.  well to make a long boring tirade short,  for the last year my friends and I having been developing our own fanstasy setting and fixing class issues that we had found.  I talked with Alex about this and had gotten this wrong impression Cry that they were unable to come up with a viable fantasy setting suitng the spycraft rule set.  I was unable to come to thier announcement pannel discussion later that evening.  we (my frineds and I) ended up playing spycraft every day at Gencon. we think it is by far the best D20 system out there today.  we talked it over after that day with Alex and decided to take our nearly finished campain setting and change our rules to a spycraft core rules.  we quickly, on our drive home, finished our classes and how we could make it all work.  we were very elated to be on the cutting edge of something.  We had never been to this site until after Gencon .  it was today that I found out about the impending release of their Fantasy-craft rules.  I talked it over with my friends and we are going to finish our work and hopfully we'll post a good portion of it here so that others may find it a refreshing new look at a stale genre. Best of Luck to you!

Yes, 4E is going to be more minatures centric because Hasbro feels it is the best to get non-players playing.

Welcome to our world (evil  Grin)

Unlike you I never was into D&D 2.0 (I assume), 3.0 or 3.5. In fact it took Spycraft 1.0 to get me back into roll playing then I quickly fell for 7th Seas (but thats a whole different story).

As much as I loved Spycraft 1.0, I think Spycraft 2.0 is to it as cel technology is to traditional land lines. The Crafty Three has done a magnificent job.
The only thing better is that they still are very accessable to the players if you ever have questions. The support here is top notch.

I won't wish you good luck in your desire to switch to Crafty, You won't need it!

And because miniatures are more profitable than a straight RPG, a fact that Games Workshop found out a long time ago.

Well product interest come in waves. Minitures seem hot now but even at the show I did see a wane in interest compared to previous years. I don't think they will slump nearly as bad as they have before, pre-painted minis really rekindled interest in the hobby.

I really don't think that 4ed is purely modivated for minis, however I do know they will better encorporate this existing line since they have the opportunity.

Let's face it having anything out on a map makes the game more tactile and interesting. With miniature becoming more cheaply available and the props to go with it (i.e. mapping terrain/devices), makes this even easier. All RPG systems are benefiting this mini renisance.

As for FantasyCraft it will be good. Very different approach to the common fantasy archtypes we've come to know and love. Somewhere floating on the boards is an example of the a group staple the bard. Pat presented it and I admit that sounds like a much more fun bard to play than the standard offered in 3.5

Hi,

Ah ha! Glad to see you (and hopefully, the rest of the Furious Three) here on the boards (<= as a note to the rest of you, this fella and his 2 pals provided me with the most fun running at the con this year). I had a hard time not spilling the beans when you guys told me about your work on a fantasy conversion Smiley I think you'll find what we're starting to do with FantasyCraft....invigorating. Not sure if I pointed you lads at this earlier at the show, but take a look at page 10 of Mongoose's Signs and Portents Roleplayer 45 for a better idea of where we're going Smiley

Personally, I liked every ed. of D&D except for 2nd ed.  The brand always carried with it a certain way of playing fantasy.  It was important to the designers to retain that D&D distinct feel and have kept to that faith despite edition changes.  WotC also recognized that the majority of households now are connected to the internet and wanted a platform to insure D&D viability to whole new generations to come.

we think it is by far the best D20 system out there today.

I'm not going to go that far but I will say that it is the best d20 modern system I have encountered so far.

I'm a bit luke-warm about it.  I am in the process of converting a multi-genre setting so I will probably get it to see what parts I can use in my conversion.

I do look forward to your work though.

Wow we have a title (furious three?) Just wanted to say you ran an awesome event, all of the crafty people did and even though the spy genre isn't my fav, i had more fun at your guys events this year at gencon then all the others.
You've set the bar high crafty for your events in the future, you've set the bar high  Grin

Ah! The noble Officer Jose, abuser of all things shotgun and the Lawman's core ability Smiley Thanks for the praise - as usual, running the Heist is a ball. Hope to see you around the tables again next year for more mayhem Wink

I've poked at some friends over who are very hard-core D&D.  They seemed to like the way that Crafty did things.  We did some homebrew to make everyone's concept fit correctly, and it worked for us.
I'm really excited to see FantasyCraft, as well as all the editions of Spellbound, and all of the Origins of Species (there are so many races I'd love to see done their way...  Mind you an ECL 0 Medusa may not be king for all, but I'd take it in a heartbeat).

Yeah, it's a great toolkit.  I just smile at all of the possibilities.  Just think of a world, and you can Craft it in any way you want.
