1. Liberal Internationalism (as defined by Matthew Yglesias) - working towards an international rule of law towards a goal of nuclear disarmament & internationally mandated peacekeeping forces.  As exemplified best by GHW Bush & second best by Bill Clinton.  Also, "[change] the very definition of American “national security” ... to account for problems such as climate change, the need for a government-stimulated transition away from fossil fuels, the challenges of global disease epidemics, and the need to construct a national education system that might allow the United States to maintain its relative standards of living during a sustained period of economic competition with China and India."

2.  Extricate the U.S. from the Marriage debate by ending the government's issuance of Marriage Licences.  The government issues partnerships.  Churches perform weddings.  When the government tries to use religious language, things get ugly.

3.  Trust the experts.  Make the Director of National Intelligence a post like the Fed - where the President can't fire him.  Treat intelligence data as though it were independently verifiable fact.  Similarly, get a Presidential science council together.   Admit that there are people smarter than you and ask them for advice in their field of expertise.  (see also: Small Wars journal, the rise of COIN practitioners, &c).

4.  If you can nationalize the losses, you can't privatize the profits.
