Montebank as I understand the term will work with Swindler.

Sometimes I'm downright psychic in my use of caveats Smiley.

In regards to retainer, if everyone has some sort of heirarchical relationship, then making a single specialty based on that is a mistake is the point I was trying to make.

So, can anyone make some silly sounding Origins out of that list? I'm sorta curious.

Right off the bat?

  • Rootwalker Miner.
  • Drake Archer.
  • Drake Dragoon.
  • Savage Wizard.

Oooh, some fun ones.  These made me chuckle to imagine the character behind them:
Simple-minded Wizard
Educated Barbarian
Righteous Criminal
Savage Aristocrat

But then there are a couple that just seem like people you would love to hate:
Cruel Warden
Gifted Swindler

And I would also like to see Smarmy as an origin. Tongue
I just really want to play a Smarmy Lord.

  • Savage Wizard.

Hmm. The Drake ones are a bit worrisome, but I can probably put the kibosh on that.
The other 2 are quite servicable. I'd just anticipate the Rootwalker settling in and breaking rocks with his toes some nights Cheesy. And favoring pit mines to shaft work.

That's single-minded, actually, so no worries there. Pretty scary combo, really.
I think Tarzan might be an educated barbarian after a while. It's certainly a functional combination, looking at the benefits. Might be fun for a character caught between two worlds.
Righteous Criminals all all the rage in fiction. Total winner there. "I didn't do it, really - but spending all that time in your little black pit gave me a few new skills and some anger issues..."
Savage is more a description of temperment than cultural complexity, and a frothing, spitting, ill-tempered noble who banishes without cause or puts to death at a whim is not much of a stretch.

Races other than humans don't get talents, but a svelte bard would be nothing short of mack-daddy-o.

A few more:
  • Giant Swindeler.
  • Striking Miner.(Just think about it for a moment if you have any knowledge of Thatcher's Britain...)
  • Drake Fighting Monk. (I dislike this specialty's name. It just doesn't flow off the tongue).
  • Pech Barbarian.
  • Wise Cavalier. (Again, think about it for a moment...)

And because no one else has said it yet, and I'm shameless: Savage Dragoon.

An Origin is the combination of Race or Talent and Specialty. Humans get a Talent and others get a Race, which is really a Talent with some extra rules tacked on. Some Talents impose penalties for selecting a Specialty or Class outside of a list of favored ones by denying you the Specialty's feat or penalizing you Action Dice.

Lessee -

A few more:
  • Giant Swindeler.

Giants are closer to big humans than ogres, so that one doesn't worry me.

  • Drake Fighting Monk. (I dislike this specialty's name. It just doesn't flow off the tongue).

Fighting Monk is actually a great specialty for Drakes, who tend to stick with natural weapons. I see how it might sound awkward, though.

  • Pech Barbarian.

Ever play Dark Sun?

Quote
  • Wise Cavalier. (Again, think about it for a moment...)

That pun is funny. However, to say there were no wise horsemen would be sort of silly Smiley

Nope. But I'm vaguely aware of the setting.

    Also:
    • Rootwalker Corsair.
    • Drake Corsair. Because that right there would be awesome.
    • Righteous Acrobat.
    • Unborn Shaman.
    • Unborn Physician.

You seem to have issues with Rootwalkers not being in forests, Drakes using tools (weapons or mounts), and apparently Unborn doing "squishy people" stuff Smiley I look at this as something of a strength - namely, in that players won't be viciously locked down to very narrow archetypes (dwarves only dig in the ground and use axes, elves only use bows or sleek light swords and moan about how things are nowadays, etc). Of 1296 possible combinations, nothing is *really* scaring me at this point...

I'm just coming up with odd / suboptimal seeming matches.

And like I said - a Drake Corsair Captain would be an awesome character to throw at players.

I can also see Drakes making attractive personal lieutenants.

    Unborn Shaman.
    Unborn Physician.

As a concept, the Unborn Shaman is pretty appealing. This can go the direction of the more typical shaman -- unborn stumbling across a low-tech tribe somewhere, who are a little in awe/fear of this strange being and take it on as a shaman. Or, my favorite, the Unborn Shaman take on as a project the leadership/development/whatever of a thoroughly alienated urban subculture acting as the quasi-spiritual medium between them and the rest of society. That would actually work best in a dark/dystopian near- to mid-future setting (e.g. with semi-sentient races that had received a partial uplift, or similar).
