*chuckle* I sorta liked the original ending and get why the writers were so irratable about having to go back and shoot it over again for an outraged audience.

I (having watched a huge amount of anime) am largely am tired of the archetypes of shody big robot anime, and some of them are deeply overused. Evangelion surprised me. It made it the central point to say that the behavior you see in most of these shows is a sign of an utterly broken psyche. Every character in that story is damaged goods. Shinji is a classic big robot anime hero - and a total wreck as a human being.

At the end of the series its no wonder that when that ragged scrap of a personality is given the power to God to remake the fantasical world around him, all he wants is to make it as mundane and placid as possible, effectively recasting a world of giant robots, alien angels, and globe-spaning conspiracies into our real world.

But I'm sure I can think of something about it to disrespect Smiley. Just gimme a minute.

I watched maybe a couple of eps and got that Shinji was the kid crushed under his father's expectations, Rei was the creepy science gone morally wrong clone kid and Asuka was the arrogant little bitch -- Kirk / Spock / McCoy if you will.

I never really got wat the whole Angel thing was about.

The EVAs were sort-of Cthulhu tech?

But the bit at the end where Asuka goes bugfuck insane and kills everything until she can't? Amusing as hell.

I can appreciate that Morg, and I made it about half-way through before I realized that I just wasn't enjoying the show and that I didn't care about any of the characters or what happened to them.

As for good things to come out of the show:

It made GAINAX a metric assload of money. Granted the got smacked for tax evasion over it, but it let them go on and do a lot of things I have truly liked.
AIC's Dual! riffs on the whole super robot genre, but it does so the hardest and most clearly on Eva.

EDIT: Seems to be a gab between video 8-9.  Hmmm, more secrets perhaps?

I do, however, think it's high time for the "photoshop Pat's head onto a Maxim model" forum contest.  Let 'em have it, Andersen!

I think I can do one better than a Maxim model.

And by better, I mean more disturbing....

I'd ask someone to pass the sulfuric acid so I could burn out my eyes, but that image would still be there.  I really don't need that to be the last thing I ever see.

If only there WAS a way to unsee it...
