I am, but I was planning on going Bounty Hunter though.   I suppose I could do Smuggler instead.
I dig Bounty Hunters too.  I'm not going to get started on why the Bounty Hunters are not working for
A)  Both sides.
B)  The Government (Republic)

I will be an Empire guild, but you can only join one guild before the game goes live.

I can see why, in theory, the republic would look down BHs for their shady way of doing things.

Count me in.

Considering the entire point of bounty hunters is to capture people that are beyond the reach of normal law enforcement...

...and Smugglers normally work against the law, helping those living outside or on the fringes of it.

Sounds like they're trying to make the game too much like the movies.

Given just how close to the movies a lot of the character design is, I'd say that's a fair comment.

And one of my bug bears with the KotOR games (and somewhat the setting as a whole) is their habit of using Bounty Hunter almost synonomously to mean Hired Killer, to the point that Mira's capturing her marks alive is held out to be exceptional

"You'll never take me alive copper!" tends to be a fairly blatant lie...

How often did frontier bounty hunters bring their marks back alive?  And how many bounties are only good if the target is brought back alive?

Plus we only see the über badass bounty hunters going after "dead or alive" bounties that do justify the paychecks.  Though I do recall some mention of Boba Fett spending time between Big bounties capturing small fry.

I want the arm mounted flamer more than anything else...

Frontier bounty hunters didn't have the panopoly of non-lethal options open to any inhabitant of a post-singularity culture like the GFFA.

Stun blasters are hardly a panoply.   Tongue

I see your point, but we're in the garden of the statistician on this one:  All the fruit is plastic.

I think the bigger thing is that within the Republic  you had separate "legal" jurisdictions.   I remember from some of the old books talk of the corporate sector which had its own laws and what not compared to the Republic.  What may be "Legal" in on area may not be in another.

Quite so.  And we aren't even getting into the fact that each planet has more than one culture.

The other thing too is if you read the overview of each class, in this case say the smuggler.  It says why they picked the side they did.

We will just go ahead and ignore the fact that the "Smuggler" class would more accurately be named the "Privateer" class.

Quote
Faced with choosing an allegiance in these uncertain times, Smugglers have been forced to consider the implications of trying to operate under the tight controls imposed by the Sith Empire. Though never the most patriotic members of Republic society, many Smugglers have decided that siding with the Republic is siding with freedom, and of course, freedom is everything.

The Republic has never indulged a systematic prejudice against Smugglers. Generally speaking, they have more commonly tangled with laws and law enforcement measures from specific star systems, not the greater Republic. Thus, it has not been overly difficult for the Jedi and the Republic military to accept Smugglers as allies in resisting the growing dominance of the Sith Empire.

This is the explanation from the Holonet as to why Smugglers work with Republic. It sort of makes sense, but I'm not to bent on getting down to the nitty gritty on it.  In SWG, Smugglers were on the Rebel side as well.

I'm not sweating the details, I will probably end up rolling a Smuggler.  Though I hope you can get a ship besides your class ship.  I dislike the Trooper ship.

Would be nice, but I loved having the YT in SWG.  I just hope the XS is also a group ship like the YT is.  Having people manning the turrets is always fun.

Next question, specialization:  Gunslinger or Scoundrel.
