i got a beta invite today to The Secret World (http://www.thesecretworld.com/) MMO by Funcom, the folks behind Age of Conan of which I play sporadically. The Secret World looks very intriguing to me b/c it reminds me a lot of the Shadowforce Archer/Spycraft/Dark Inheritance campaign settings in a few areas and was the main reason I signed up for it. I'll let you know my impressions of it after I've had a day or two to play around with it.

Good for them. I love it when studios take the time they need (obviously, as it's something we do far too often - even for my taste).

Absolutely.  As much as I want Bioshock Infinite like last week, I just cannot fault him for wanting the game to be perfect.  Too many companies are forced to stick to release dates and end up with a game with issues (Fallout: Vegas, Skyrim, Dragon Age II, and maybe even Mass Effect 3).

Plus it was going to release around the same time as Dishonored (Oct 9th / 12th) and Hitman (Nov 20th), along with the general juggernauts like the latest Call of Duty iteration, Assassins Creed III, Resident Evil 6, and Halo 4.  So the new date is likey good for them all round.

I know somebody that is in the Beta.

He is thinking about canceling, not because he doesn't like the game, but so that he can wait and play everything fresh in the full release.

He is very happy with the game, and is trying to talk me into playing, though I would likely be Templar and he is Dragon.

What I have seen looks very good.

I've been pretty happy so far it's right up my alley in terms of what I prefer to play. It really is like someone took all the fluff from Shadowforce Archer, the Spycraft CCG, Dark Inheritance, and tossed in a extra large helping of Lovecraft. I'm in a little town called Kingsmouth, it's pretty much Kingsport. I got there by going thru Argartha or Hollow Earth from New York since that's where the Illumanati are based, and that was really cool. I've fought a bunch of undead and a few deep ones. There's been some really large scary stuff just out of my sight in the fog but I haven't got a chance to go out there a die, so maybe tonight. There's a large helping of Mythos names dropping everywhere, lovecraft lane, arkham st. etc.

It can be a bit frustrating at times b/c it's a beta but I've not encountered any serious bugs as of yet. you can see how cool it's going to be once it's done.

Got to love the "non-DRM" requirement to be logged into their servers to even play the Single Player game.  Blizzards servers aren't working and you can't play the game you bought at all.

And this is why I am not currently playing, nor likely to start playing in the near future, Diablo III.

Took a look at the 'must be online' requirement for Diablo 3 and decided to give the game a pass - this is not behavior that should be rewarded. (My actual comment on finding out about this was less than printable, and involves relegating the game to places where the sun does not traditionally shine.)

As for Secret World... my friend ended up springing for the lifetime membership. I guess that he liked it.... Tongue

This is one of the things that griefs me about ME3, the way it has to talk to EA every time you hit the opening menu in order to verify the DLC. It's no wonder people are grabbing .exe cracks or simply outright pirating for the single player.
