So, anybody else played Bioshock? I've been playing it the day or so, and I'm impressed. It reminds me of System Shock 2, which is high praise coming from me, since SS2 is quite possible my most favourite game ever. It's definately Game of the Year-material, though with all the awesome games coming out in the coming months, it'll have competition there. But so far it's been a helluva ride, and I expect to finish it later this weekend.

There are exactly two control issues that are wonky, but i am sure that once you get used to them, the game is even better...

Sweet! It seems to have hedged a fair bit toward the junior market since the last material I saw. Not sure how I feel about that. Could work (I loved The Sims), might not (hated The Sims Online). As in that case, it'll all come down to gameplay.

Wow, that does look spectacular. One of those games in which I might not mind a limited gamma slider.

Maybe it'll be the game that finally hooks me up with that action trigger I've always wanted to see: a combat that starts the second you move your spotlight over the monsters (simulating them laying in wait for you).

I was playing Bio Shock for a little bit and, overall, I really didn't like it.

I played this game through the first area (Medical Pavilion), killed Steinmann, rescued the first Little Sister, killed the Big Daddy, rescued the second Little Sister, found the Bathysphere to the next area and then decided I really didn't like the game.  I restarted last night on Easy so I could just blow through it.  With all the hype this game received, people everywhere will be playing it and I just want to finish it so I know what people are talking about.

Some of the things I didn't like:
   Having just entered into an alien, unknown, underwater world, one of the first thing your character does is think that stabbing himself in the wrist and injecting some unknown red, glowing substance into his bloodstream is a good idea.
   The main character somehow manages to  carry on him a wrench, a pistol, a machine gun, a shot gun, enough ammo to make the Columbine Massacre look like a pre-schoolers birthday party, 9 med kits, 9 hypos and god knows how many auto-hacking tools, tonics and other odds and ends you can accumulate, plus some more weapons I am sure I have not found yet..  (This is a common problem I have with first person shooters)
   The "moral" decision concerning Little Sisters, with a Nazi Scientist saying "SAVE THEM" and a doting father and husband saying "KILL THEM", just seems too contrived.  It feels like something that was put in just to be controversial, but it comes across as a cheap publicity stunt.
   I never quite got the "feel" of the setting.  Part post-apocalyptic, part sci-fi, part lovecraftian, it just seemed like a mish-mash of elements jammed together.
   Vita-chambers.  Death means nothing.  One strategy guide I read listed as a valid tactic drawing drawing Big Daddies back to Vita-Chambers so that you could just die and respawn repeatedly to kill them.  The only penalty to dying is you get teleported to a different location and you get half-health and half-Eve (mana).

Things I liked:
   The hacking mini-game is pretty fun.  Hack early, hack often and hack everyting in sight.

Let's see...
   The doctor is actually jewish, she suffered in the concentration camps but she didn't really care, because the research they were performing interested her or somesuch. Quite a twisted bird, actually...
   Well, it's the old realism vs. fun problem... frankly, I'm not too bothered by it, as the rest of the game isn't really bogged down in realism.
   Most of the things that might look a bit weird now, will all be explained in the Surprise Twist™ will explain it all very neatly, and pretty ironically too.
   Still haven't died, though I got in a couple sticky situations, mostly involving the early big daddies. Otherwise, /well, I guess you could see the vita-chambers as a sort of checkpoint?
   There's more, but it's late, so... yeah, it's a good game. Not the best ever, by certainly one of the best so far this year.

You just can't go wrong with that.

Unless you have a tiny area to play in, then it becomes rather painful...

I've actually been using my Wii a fair bit lately as a slideshow machine. My flatmates went to Japan for two weeks and came back with 4-5Gb worth of photos on SD memory cards. I was able to slot them directly into the Wii, fire up the Photo Gallery, set it to auto-play and let them play back the photos for us. Genius!

Also, the great thing about getting a Wii over a PS3 is you can pick up a Wii and some games and still have money left over from what you would have spent on the PS3 alone.

Has this been mentioned yet? If nothing else, the trailer gives me hope that they might be making it with the right sort of attitude... The original Deus Ex is one of my favourite games of all time (and the sequel is what I consider to be the biggest flop in gaming history)... so really looking forward to what these new guys can manage to do with it!

I read a blurb that came across the wire a few days ago but hadn't seen the trailer yet. Nice. I'm glad they're posing one of the important storyline questions out the gate. Hopefully the game will live up to the first outing, as the second one was largely meh.
