Windows has just informed me that Service Pack 3 is now available for download. Rather than throw all caution to the wind and click on the Download button I thought I'd see how it runs for others first.

Has anyone installed SP3 yet, and if you have, how is your system going? I heard from someone who had installed an early copy of the Pack that it had sped his computer up a bit, but things might have changed with the release version.

As do I. I didn't start using XP until SP2, and I probably don't be using Vista until its SP2 comes out, too.

I'm surprised there's another Service Pack at all, I was assuming they'd tell folks with major problems to start using Vista.

The thingie is -> Vista lost. They will be replacing it  in 2009, yes 2009.
And I think that the replacement will be closer to XP then we might imagine...

Actually, in all likelihood the replacement will be Vista with IE8, (quite possibly) Powershell replacing CMD.exe, WinFS (or at least parts of it) replacing NTFS5, and the MinWin kernel that was supposed to go into Vista in the first place instead of the hacked up XP kernel that it wound up with so it could make ship dates. Some of the XP power toys and their functionality will likely be folded into the OS or included applications too.

The Milestones of Windows 7 tend to confirm this as Aero is still there (and it honestly is a better interface to explorer even with all the 3D stuff turned off) and the only changes to the UI are polishing and moving some links to features around and letting gadgets be added to explorer windows in addition to the sidebar. There's no doubt the UAC might get some refinements (preferably to actually ask you for your password so it has a point other then acting as an annoying roadblock).

And the release date for Windows 7 is 2010, which considering that XP, Server 2003, Vista, and Server 2008 all missed their release dates (spectacularly so in Vista/2008's case) I seriously doubt we'll see Windows 7 until at least 2011 or 2012.

Of course, it's likely that Windows 7 will also include NGSCB and "trusted" computing. Sad

So far 3 systems I have are running SP3 with no issues.   All are running Win XP Pro. (knock on wood)...     If you haven't done it, wait a month.

I seriously need to get a Mac.

I switched back to mac last year after taking a 3-year xp break. Have really liked it, even though Leopard seemed to bring a little weirdness to my install. It's a lot snappier to use, though, so maybe they'll iron out the final kinks in the upcoming 10.5.3...

Ahem... much like Microsoft, AT&T, DEC, and everyone else... Apple's been saying that since the Lisa.

Thanks for the link, meadicus. As I've got an AMD processor, I'll be waiting another couple of weeks before I upgrade.
