Jesse

Forcing his frustration back, Jesse decides to reason with the Dr. "Put yourself in our shoes, Doctor.  We wake up in the dark with no idea why we're here.  We hear something in the dark, we are naturally defensive.  What's more, we hear you call us by numbers, with some reference to knowing at least something about what this place is, why we're here, and what was done to us.  Given those circumstances, I'm sure you'd probably be a little tense and desiring a little more knowledge yourself, so forgive us for being rather ON EDGE."

"Now, before we sit here and sing KumBaYah, can you tell us what out there is likely to result in our dying, or is there something else we need to do to earn the trust that may very well save our lives? Pretty please maybe? Or maybe we just sit here in the damn dark till the lights go out and we all die when whatever ball of teeth you seem to be scared of finally finds us?"

Doctor Flint

A small smile tugs at the edge his lips.  "My apologies for my use of calling you by numbers, but until recently there were many more of you and your number is all I really know you by."

Flint opens his eyes and looks up at those near him.  "If you have anything to bar that door" he says, while pointing towards the stairwell, "I suggest you do it.  Whatever was wandering around wasn't that far below us, and there is a good chance it heard something from us just now."

With a sigh, Flint pushes himself back up to his feet and for the first time, the trace of sarcasm leaves his voice.  "You are in a research facility on a remote island in the Pacific.  There were three projects underway here, all designed to augment the natural abilities of the test subjects.  You were among the volunteers that joined us for this project.  Each of you has been genetically re-engineered for increased agility and toughness.  Unfortunately, there were some unforeseen complications, side-effects if you will."

"Many of the volunteers died when their systems rejected the re-engineering process.  But those that got past that stage saw a marked increase in ability.  At that point, we thought we were past the worst of the effects, but a hidden problem lay lurking still.  The genetic engineering caused problems in the subjects brains as they basically rewired themselves to their new DNA blueprint.  It seemed synaptic pathways were being shut down and portions of the brain became inaccessible.  The first warnings we had was the loss of memory, but then autonomic functions ceased to function, hearts stopped beating, people stopped breathing.  Basically, the brain forgot how to keep the body alive.  In a lucky few; subjects 1-03, 1-05, 1-17, 2-09 and 3-01; the only pathways destroyed were those effecting memory."

With the last statement, Flint looks around the corridor at the people present.  "It is unknown if those memories are recoverable.  The going theory is that the memories are still there, the pathways just need to be re-established.  That means you may have flashbacks, or memories that you don't recognize.  The closer your new experiences are to your old ones, the more apt the brain is to rewire a portion of your brain containing more unremembered portions of your life.  But it also possible the same process that removed the pathways just destroyed the memories, too."

Flint pauses and sighs "The latest tests show that the rewiring process has slowed down to a near stop.  Your lapses in memory should be over now, but there is still a small chance for a relapse.  You were being kept out for observation, but something happened recently and...I think I may have stepped over the corpse of the person in the stairwell who was supposed to check on you."

Suddenly remembering something, Flint pulls an ID from his pocket and takes a look at it.

Who was that in the stairwell, and why were they armed?

  Mitchell

Taking a deep breath, he looks at the  others around him, to no one in particular, "Great guinie pigs on a test wheel, are we volunteers or volunteered?", taking another deep breath, and letting it out slowly. "Alright Doc, blood stains on the wall, a dead body in a stairwell, and you scared  s@#%less by something and waving around a pitol like its a baton, what the hell is going on? Next question are there more weapons and gear around here so we can do unto others before they do unto us first?

Doctor Flint

"There is something making quite a stir down below.  I locked myself in a lab and it banged on the door with enough strength to almost buckle the steel door inwards.  It is likely the result of one of the other experiments, but all these projects operated on a need-to-know basis, and I wasn't one of the ones deemed as needing to know, so I can only guess.  But I know I heard something below me when I was coming up.  That would be at least three floors down from here"

"The nearest place to arm yourself would be the armory one floor down.  I don't know if my badge will get us access, but," Flint pauses long enough to read the card again, "Doctor Ron Anderson's badge may work."

"Oh, and you might want to check that clip.  It appeared Anderson was killed with it in his possession.  There is no telling how many rounds he discharged."

*swears softly in Spanish* "How long have we been in this island getaway resort?" *sarcasm dripping* "And barring that, any other way down to the armory?"

Doctor Flint

"It was about a year ago when we took volunteers for augmentation.  As to alternate routes, there is one.  There is an elevator, but it doesn't run on emergency power.  I guess we could pop open the door and go down the shaft, but I don't think it would be inherently safer than the stairs."

Looking over to Reese: "We are in a facility geared towards creating augmented soldiers.  You took my weapons.  Yes, the armory is our best first bet."

To Hart: "To my knowledge, all of the projects had similar goals to create an augmented soldier that was more agile, stronger and tougher than the normal soldier.  But information was classified and what they were actually doing to achieve those goals is unknown to me.  If we can find a working computer terminal and lay low for a bit, I may be able to extract some more information."

To Buck:  "I can show you what I know of the layout, but parts of the facility were off limits to me."

  Mitchell

Leaning against the wall for a moment a dozen thoughts falsh through his head. Even though he does not have the memories apparently he earned his rank and he had to get his sierra together to see them out of this situation.
Reese

" so captain mitchell how do you wanna get down there?"
The question brings his back to the here and now.  Looking at Reese, "we have no rapelling gear, no tactical gloves, nothing. So we go down the stairs, Reese you have point, I'll be right behind, Doc you stay behind me, Davis you stay behind him, if he tries to betray us, he goes first.  Hart is next, Buck you have the tail. For now lets keep a close interval and make sure to keep eachother in sight, lets move slow and quite. We'll check the body on the way down.

Doctor Flint

Flint rolls his eyes at the mention of betrayal and thinks great, just great.  I tell them everything they wanted to know and they still don't trust me.  I had better keep my wits about me.  They'll throw me to the wolves if they think it will give them a better shot of getting out of here.  The less they know the more they need me, so I better not tell them any more than they absolutely need to know.

Flint then sighs, shakes his head and falls into line, pulling out and uncapping one of the syringes from his pocket.

Jesse Buck

"Now Doc, I've seen you fingering those needles like a junkie with an itch -- if they was medicine, you'd be a lot more protective of them.  Seems to me that a man wandering into the unknown is going to instinctively reach for a weapon, which is what you've got all uncapped and pointy-looking right there.  Maybe it's just that we've only recently woke up as medical guinea pigs and all, but it sure would go a long way towards me trusting you if you were to come clean about what's in those syringes.  Nothing personal here Doc, but I'm just trying to limit the unknowns in a sea of uncertainty here."

Doctor Flint

"It's a sedative.  Not as strong as I would like against what we might be facing, but at least whatever killed me might feel a little sick about it afterwards.  I'd let you guys use it but in untrained hands these things can be more dangerous to us than the person you are stabbing."
