Over at www.ironmanmovie.com they have a new layout, complete with the TV spot that aired with the Superbowl and a few new pics that haven't made their rounds on the Internet yet.

This movie is going to kick so much ass...

 Shocked

No, wait.

 Shocked Shocked Shocked

There.

Wow, either they've got the best trailer editors ever or this movie is gonna kick righteous amounts of ass. I sincerely, sincerely hope it's the latter.

Pardon my French, but F--K ME! Why must we have to wait another two months for this movie?

Marvel's hanging a lot on this movie.  Besides the Marvel Adventures and Ultimate lines, there's the current monthly series, Iron Man: Director of SHIELD, and the miniseries wrapping up in March, Iron Man: Enter the Mandarin.  Soon to come are a new monthly, The Invincible Iron Man focusing on Tony Stark versus Obadiah Stane's son, a Jon Favreau-written miniseries, Iron Man: Viva Las Vegas, and another miniseries bringing the decades-back story of Doctor Doom, Iron Man, and King Arthur to a close, Iron Man: Legacy of Doom.  As a long-time IM fan, I'm very pleased - even if it means opening up my comics budget somewhat.

I think Marvel has realised that some of their more recent movies haven't done as well as they could have. The X-Men and Spiderman series started off great, but had pretty much died by their third movies. The Fantastic Four missed the mark, if only slightly. Ghost Rider was okay, but aimed at an older market, as was The Punisher.

With Iron Man, Marvel have a chance to kick things off afresh. A good cast, good story and good effects should help them get back on track. I'm guessing that Nick Fury will show up as either a cameo, or in a slightly larger role in the second movie before getting his own feature length movie in a few years time. Then there's Captain America, and a few other Marvel classics waiting in the wings.

Funny, but of the ones you mentioned, Punisher and the third X-Men were the only movies Marvel has managed that I didn't find hopelessly mediocre. It took them a while to figure out what was cool about the X-Men, and after they got past trying to pile on the revisionist garbage, they just went back to old storylines. Voila. Unfortunately, they'd already lost a ton of interest with the utterly crappy X-men 2...

The Punisher also went back to its roots for a plot, and was tons of fun as a result. My initial skepticism about Thomas Jane turns out to have been entirely misplaced. The monologue at the end of the movie needed to be either cut or restyled, though.

Based on current Hollywood trends, we may all count ourselves lucky if we don't see the Hoff reprise his role as Nick Fury. If you haven't seen that movie then you have excellent precognitive survival instincts.

X3, especially after the magnificence of X2, was a big ol' skroo-you to the fans and franchise.  There's a persistent story about that one.  Within days of wrapping X2, Bryan Singer began pushing for the third movie, but Fox kept delaying and delaying, and as soon as Singer signed for Superman Returns, Fox approved X3 and basically sent in the "second team" to make it.  While James Marsden was under a three-movie contract with Fox for X-movies, as soon as he was cast in SR, the decision was made to kill Cyclops.

Spider-Man 3... *sigh*  Tried to fit too much into the movie.  Entirely too much.  Too many villains, too much plot (and not enough development), too much, well, fan service.  Completely excising the Hobgoblin/New Goblin story and giving that time over to fleshing out the animosity between Peter Parker and Eddie Brock, instead of relying on a handful of lines of dialogue, would have made a world of difference.  Venom's villain enough to have been the only antagonist for Spider-Man.

There's another persistent rumor, which nobody seems able to confirm or deny, that we're going to see Samuel Jackson and Hilary Swank in Iron Man as Nick Fury and the Black Widow, respectively.  Also, in Incredible Hulk, Downey will show up as Iron Man to consult with General Ross on the Hulk problem.  I think Marvel's going to do the string of solo movies introducing the Avengers as individual heroes, then go forward with an Avengers team movie - by then, audiences will be familiar with the characters, so no need to devote a fourth to a third of the movie to backstory and establishing work.

Don't forget about the Blade movie series... the first two were pretty good, I thought, and Goyer should stick to just writing.

There's supposed to be an Ant-Man movie from the director of "Shaun of the Dead" and "Hot Fuzz".

Don't get me wrong, I loved The Punisher. I was saying that it was aimed at a somewhat older audience than the usual Marvel movie.

As for Tony appearing in Hulk, that's gonna be sweet. Hopefully Thor gets off the ground and they manage to tie that one in as well. The Marvel movies have been a little too stand alone thus far, it will be nice if they can start bringing them together a little more.

I think the Jackson/Fury rumour has been circulating since his likeness was used for Fury in one of the comics. I'd love to see him play the character, but would prefer someone a little more, to be honest, beautiful as Black Widow. Swank is a great actress and all, but I'd prefer someone a bit more like Fameke Jansen.

Famke would make a perfect Natasha (cf: Xenia Onnatopp), but unfortunately she's already played a more famous Marvel redhead, firmly cementing that image in people's minds....

How about Charlize Theron? The short spiky cut looks good on her, and she's got the right build for a classic Marvel female.
