(I didn't know whether to post this here or in Off Topic.)

I've been noticing a discrepancy for a while. On the main forum page, it says we currently have 466 members. Using the [more stats] link, there is a table listing stats by month, including new members. If I add up that column, I get 167 members.

For those of you with some forum fu, can you tell us what is going on?

First wild guess is that the table is counting first postings for members, but I have done no digging to confirm it.

There might be some confusion if there are a large number of Spammers joining the forum, and then getting subsequently banned and removed. That's just the first thing that comes to mind for me.

Spambots often manage to create a new account but fail at activating it (to simplify crudely) - I'd guess a lot of those users never had their accounts activated. Last time I checked, SMF had a feature for pruning unactivated accounts after a set period...

Of course, sometimes  you can get flooded without having an actual Viagra/iPhone spammer, but...  Wink

I went and looked at the members listing. It said there were 462 members, not 466. Those with at least 1 post accounted for 222 accounts, so I don't think its all the result of unactivated accounts.

I just tried refreshing the stats to see if that would fix the issue. One thing that's important to note is that the forum software is synched with the user accounts on the front page - when you create an account there, you also get a SMF account. This forum member count matches our registered site user count.

The interesting thign is we get thousands of unique visitors here - on an order of magnitiude of 4-to-1 of the registered users and over 10-1 on active posters. There's a lot of lurking around these parts... Smiley
