Christmas seems to be a time for attempts at humourous billboards.

(click to show/hide)

As for Tom Coburn, what has he got to lose? He's retiring, and seems to be the honey badger of politics. The best response I've seen to his actions was the suggestion that they wait for him to leave the building, then shut all the doors and retake the votes he blocked. They all had massive bipartisan support, it would have been easy.

NZ has it's own version of eBay, called TradeMe. Like eBay, TradeMe allows users to sell their cars. Recently, a listing appeared on TradeMe that was, well, judge for yourself...

Hi two the people

up for sale is my much loved 1994 toyota hilux surf 3l turbo diesel 4wd it is a great turck will be sad to see it go i am selling it as i am looking to down size very tidy interior faw scratchers and bumps on the outside as expected for a 4wd serviced every 5,000kms ruc up to date gear box is average and it a good runner around

2 mouths ago i put 4 new tyers on it

it is sold as is as there is no aa report with the turck is was lost when i got the 4x4 so dont ask for it if people ask for it there will be blocked and roped to trademe

Naturally, users were suspicious of a car, sorry 'turck' for sale with no license plates or AA report. They tried asking for more information in the Questions and answers section, and the user's story fell apart. In response, they did what any well-humoured Kiwi would do and trolled the sh!t out of him.

Some of the highlights:

Quote
Q: Is there a reward for finding the lost AA report?
A: No

Quote
Q: How long ago where the number plates rotated to ensure even wear?
A: Don't know

Quote
Q: When was the flux capacitor changed?
A: Don't know

Quote
Q: Roughly how many bongs do you dabble in per day? And do you think this may have something to do with not being able to find that aa report? Have you looked where you keep your stash?
A: K

Quote
Q: Picture this, we recreate the 'I'm flying jack' scene from Titanic but with me and you on the Bonnet of your turck. But totally different, like down a steep hill and we both have Mexican hats and mostauches. We drive to top of a steep hill, put the turck in neutral and let it purr. Quickly get in position on the Bonnet and you yell to me 'Were flying dude!'. It will be magical
A: What

The Turck now has its own Facebook page, because that's how we roll in NZ.

I just got back from seeing The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies at my local(ish) cinema. Here are my spoiler-free thoughts...

  • It doesn't feel like 144 minutes worth of screen time. Things move at a fairly rapid pace from the first scene.
  • Yes, it deviates from the story presented in the book. By now that should be no surprise to anyone.
  • While it does differ, just about everyone ends up where they're supposed to.
  • We've already heard it, but Billy Boyd's song is an excellent way to close out the series.
  • Not all of the dwarfs get a chance to shine (don't worry, there's no Bombur: Barrel Warrior), but most of the supporting cast did.
  • Dain.

...I feel particularly bad for the bowler (Sean Abbott) who I would not be surprised if he never played cricket again...

Hughes' wife did make a point of sitting with Abbott while they were in the hospital, making it clear she felt no ill will towards him. The captain of the national team has also told him that he's happy to have him back once he's ready to return to the game. It's great to see everyone treating him with kindness, and maybe they'll turn their efforts to making sure helmets and the like provide proper protection from now on.

One of the guys at my gaming club has been playing in the beta. It doesn't have a warband creator yet, but the game is still a lot of fun.

Looks like this will be another title that ends up getting money many of us would have happily spent on miniatures and rules from GW.

Curiously I live in a very wet state, and am a teetotaler myself.
Oh well. Always missing out on the fun. Cool

Someone needs to be the sober driver Wink

Pretty much. Kiwis have using VPNs for some time. Earlier this year, a couple of smaller ISPs even started offering their own VPN service, complete with instructions on how to fool the sign up process (which requires a US address).

While offering the VPN is legal, the other part is highly dubious at best, and probably breaks a couple of Netflix's T&Cs. It's believed that, when it does become available here, it will only offer a fraction of the content available in the States (for rights reasons) and they'll finally crack down on the VPN viewers, forcing people to watch the local version.

In the meantime, we've just had one NZ-based alternative launch (Lightbox), with another going live 'later this year' that is basically an OnDemand version of the only current cable-like network (Sky TV). The latter comes from a company that bought up the exclusive rights in NZ to Game of Thrones, then created an all new premium channel to air it (costing $10/month on top of the existing ~$50/month subscription).

Is it any wonder so many people down here prefer to download their TV.

Rachel Maddow explains Twitter dead drop boxes

Politics aside, using generic, anonymous Twitter accounts sounds like an interesting way to bring dead drops into the 21st Century (without the need for USB sticks or micro SD cards).

I just hope it lets you save your progress this time.

The use of music by the show has been excellent so far, and I hope it continues.

People will just need to go out and get them because they will then be making more money as employees than living more comfortably on welfare (aka the taxes the rest of us have earned).

I hope those jobs aren't minimum wage, because then they'll need two or three to be able to survive.

Here's a crazy theory: Raise the minimum wage so people only need one job to stay above the poverty line. They'll earn more money, and in turn spend more money on goods, services, and the occasional luxury. This will put more money back into the economy, to the benefit of business owners.

Just a thought.

Oh, and it's not all bad. Oregon voted to legalise marijuana. Hopefully there will some strong westerlies in the near future and the second hand toke calms the rest of the country.

There are a lot of women who would also argue that Cumberbatch is hot.

As for Wonder Woman, Marvel beat DC to that announcement with two TV shows featuring female leads (Agent Carter and Jessica Jones - both of which have female Exec Producers and showrunners). Also, both shows are part of the movie continuity, unlike DC's offerings.

Is either side perfect? No?
Are people going to be upset because actor X wasn't cast as Doctor Strange? Of course.
Are a whole lot of people going to go to the cinema and seriously enjoy themselves? Absolutely.
Will this be the time that things work out and the Wonder Woman movie actually gets made? I certainly hope so (but I'm not holding my breath).

...and Constantine really doesn't fit properly into the broader DC universe.

That's not really anything new for DCU TV shows Wink

Wow, I must have missed this...

If you're on Facebook, you should Like Dean Devlin. He posts fairly regular mini production updates. I like what I'm seeing (but I'm easy to please) and the cast looks great (even if it meant Frewer couldn't an event here in NZ last weekend).
