Those are not bonuses, typed or otherwise. They are increases to threat range.

Hmmm... I guess so. That's what I get for posting after midnight apparently Tongue.

Still, I think I will go with Krensky on this one and just say 'No'.

Ah, ok, I was missing something
But, as others have said all those items are a pretty big investment in Reputation and Renown.

EDIT 3: WAIT, waitwaitwait....just wait, hang on now. These bonuses DO have a type. According to Skill Check Modifiers on page 63:

Magic: Spells and magic items impose these modifiers.

Thus, having multiple items with this essence on them will not stack, as they are the same type of bonus.

EDIT: 240 Reputation by my count. 8 Greater Threat range Essences (160), assuming you take Packrat you will need total Renown of 4 for your prize limit, so 80 assuming you have one of the discounts. This is also assuming you have Essence Supremacy so you can make a 3 essence item.

EDIT 2: Woops, I am wrong on the artifact part, you can only have the same essence on an artifact multiple times if   they are different 'versions'. So thats two more renown needed, bringing the total Reputation to 280 (assuming discounts).

Wait... how does having auto-threats give you auto-crits? You should still need action dice to confirm all of these spellcasting checks, regardless of threat range. You also still need to meet the spellcasting DC regardless of threat range.

Unless I am missing something...

The one thing I've wanted differently with FC is the scaling of special attack DCs.  A DC 10(the base for a Grade I special attack) is a decent but not scary challenge for a low level party.  However, that same DC is trivial for a higher level party.  By only option to increase that DC is to raise the grade...which for the same threat to the party, the monster has be worth more exp.  And in some case, MUCH more exp, with some of the grades costing 4 or 5 points each.  A baseline save DC, with the ability to arbitrarily boost it above/below normal(at a cost, naturally), would be ideal.

One way you could bodge the system is us the Sliding Scale for skill DC's on page 370. So a Grade I attack would use the 'Easy' column, Grade II would use the 'Average' column, etc.

not sure how well this would really work, just a thought I had after reading your post.

There are a couple of spells that give a bonus to defense that affect multiple targets, but with some limitations or other modifiers, no mass Mage Armor though.

The second book comes out upon Tuesday of this coming week - Curtsies & Conspiracies.

Thus far I have only read the first three chapters, which are available upon Amazon by way of a free sample - which begins with the vexing question: Does one need four fully grown foxgloves for decorating a dinner table for six guests? Or is it six foxgloves to kill four fully grown guests?

I very much doubt me that this second installment will last unread for even a single evening.

The Auld Grump

I have to wait to pick up my copy. A friend of mine is opening his own bookstore and I want to get it from there. I hate having to wait though, I really enjoyed the first book.

You never know, it may be replaced, joined with another spell, or maybe moved to another discipline- I've noticed three other spells missing; Harm, Scare I, Scare II.

But like Alex said, most of the spells are just unfinished- those might have some rebalancing/rewriting in the wings and so are set aside for it.  With Harm missing I would still love to see a real counter to Heal- inflict a handful of conditions or a spell like that that inflicts a critical injury.

Eh? I have Harm, Scare I, and Scare II in my preview, Harm is on page 71 and Scare I & II are on page 124.

I agree it could be possible that Project Presence could have been held back due to making adjustments though.

So if you are keeping score, from the document:

channeler   107
conjurer   100
enchanter   92
preserver   77
prophet   68
reaper   89
seer           102
trickster     48

total     683

Hmm... I noticed that Project Presence (from the core rulebook) is not in the preview doc, so we could add one more to the Trickster school, for a total of 49.

I could've easily typo'd a number as well, but 680ish is about right. I hadn't actually noticed the Hide In Plain Sight spell, that ones pretty cool.

I have to say that most of the zero level spells are pretty nice, especially when you take 'The Gift' into account for non-spellcaster characters.

By my count (or Excels count anyway...) there are 685 spells in the current Grimoire. I believe the plan was to eventually have 888 (which breaks down to 111 per school and 37 per discipline). The plan may have changed or there are still quite a few spells being worked on.

Some favorites I can pick out right now: Zot!, Tic, Breeze Strike, Crackling Tempest, and Summon Legion.

  • The next physical product for Fantasy Craft is Spellbound and you'll be seeing an update for that very soon (before I leave for TactiCon over Labor Day weekend. At the same time, all pre-order customers will receive the FULL TEXT for the current Grimoire, sans notes and unwritten spells. No, we cannot take new pre-orders - at this stage it would be unethical, and we'd prefer to just get it out for everyone.

Has anyone received this?  It was a while ago, and it's now a month after 2nd Sept and I haven't seen anything.  Can't find an update anywhere either, and none of my group have mentioned getting it (it's most definitely something several of them would have mentioned).

I don't think anyone has. I haven't seen or heard much of anything from the Crafty folks since shortly after Tacticon. I am a bit worried to be honest...

Great, thanks guys. Now, next question, lol

Quote
SORCERER
Your cold, calculating demeanor suggests something not
quite natural in your ancestry.

Bonus Feat: Any 1 Species feat
Charming: Once per session, you may improve the
Disposition of any 1 non-adversary NPC by 5.
Paired Skills: Each time you gain 1 or more ranks in the
Spellcasting skill, you gain equal ranks in the Intimidate
skill. This may not increase your Intimidate skill beyond its
maximum rank.
Terrifying Look: The Will save DCs of stress damage you
inflict increase by 4.

Does ANY species feat mean even those for other races?

Since you are given your choice of feats you still need to meet the prerequisites (i.e. species).

I am actually really curious what the page count of Spellbound is going to be. From what Pat has said it is shaping up to be a pretty big supplement.
Pages: 1 [2] 3 4 ... 8
