So were you upset about Idris Elba playing Heimdall?
Maximiliano Hernández playing Jasper Sitwell?
Ben Kingsley as the (sorta) Mandarin?
Djimon Hounsou as Korath the Pursuer?
Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Algrim the Strong?
J. August Richards as Deathlok?
Why is the Storm family being black in a self-contained universe a bridge too far? It won't be folded back into the 616 books.
Also, did Denzel Washington as Don Pedro upset you too?
Ok hang on a minute. Time out. You keep making this a much bigger issue to me than it is. You keep saying "upset" when I'm not upset, and I have never used the word upset, except to try and correct you. I am
however, getting upset at you trying to make this a bigger issue than it is, and painting me as some kind of anti-equal rights douche. I'm going to restate my point one more time, you can call me upset again and then we can leave it, k?
Let's get a couple of things straight, shall we?
I have no objections in the slightest
to black superheroes, female superheroes, LGBT superheroes, white superheroes, dog superheroes, raccoon superheroes, poor superheroes, middle class superheroes, or any other superhero
What I object to - and to be clear again
, it's not a major objection, it's more of a "WTH?" observation (because it doesn't even warrant a WTF response) - is that they appear to be re-writing major characters, characters who are very clearly established as a particular archetype, and are doing so contrary to the published material.
Was I upset at Heimdall? No. Did I notice? Much like Morgenstern, yeah I noticed. And to be frank, it doesn't make a lot of sense for him to be black either, given this is the Norse Pantheon/Asgardians we're talking about here. Did it ruin my enjoyment of the Thor movies? Hell no! Heimdall is an awesome character, and I liked him just fine.
Jasper Sitwell? Couldn't care less, I'm not enough of a comic book fan to have even recognised the name, had to Wiki it.
The (not)Mandarin? The less said about him the better. Terrible, awful, just plain bad story, badly handled.
I had never even heard of the Guardians of the Galaxy before the movie, so I have no reference point for Korath.
Algrim the Strong? I can't find a comic book image of him without his ridiculous armour. The closest I can find is this:
and it sure looks to me like he has black skin there. Plus as Kurse who can tell anyway?
Deathlok has been several people (it's often referred to as "Deathlok technology") so, no I have no issues with any actor playing Deathlok.
It won't be folded back into the 616 books
But that makes it worse
not better - and to be honest I think there's a better than even chance the printed versions will
be updated to match the movie, because sales.
But Johnny Storm is not that guy. He just isn't. And if the guy in the trailer is some dude called Donny Tempest, I have no objections at all.
Let me ask you a question: Were you equally ambivalent to the plot of U-571?
