Title: Reaperwatch 2012: The End is Nigh!

We start the year off with a great loss...

Bob Anderson, the great swordsmaster who trained Viggo Mortenson, Adrian Paul, Sean Connery and even portrayed Darth Vader for the lightsaber fighting.

I think the scandal finally breaking and the scarring it did to Penn State is what killed him more than anything. The man died of a broken heart. ... Still, RIP Joe

Paterno lost his job as part of a pretty big-deal controversy surrounding on-campus child molestation by an assistant coach of his, which many believe Paterno could have done more (and perhaps far far more) to prevent had he so chosen. There are partisans for both sides, but the reasonably-supported allegation that he turned a blind eye to 12-year-olds getting raped in the Penn State locker room is pretty damning.

Either way, though, he's passed on now, and hopefully that'll allow everyone to clear their heads and be more careful going forward. We'll see.

Because like most people who didn't go to Penn State he's judged the man on the incomplete details presented in the media. Primarily the narrative that he didn't report Sandusky to the police. The problem with that narrative though, is that he did report the allegations to the campus police and administration. That part is commonly, but not universally reported. This is typically followed by people asking why he didn't tell the real police. The thing is, and what alost now news story has mentioned because no one does research anymore, is that the Penn State Campus Police at the main campus are the real police for the campus. Also, Sandusky was retired, he was on campus because the administrtion let him maintain an office and use their facilities for his, until this broke, highly regarded children's charity.

Consider this scenario:

A young man, who you've know for a few years and first met as a snot nosed freshman comes to you and (accounts vary, but let's go with the worst case) tells you that he saw a man who has been a good friend of yours for decades (longer then the young man's been alive) and is highly respected in the community raping a child in the shower.

What's your first reaction?

You then, despite your understandable doubts and emotional rejection of the very idea, report it to the police and bosses (since it happened at work). They take the report and then nothing happens.

Is it reasonable for you to come to the conclusion that the authorities investigated it and found nothing?

The board fired Joe because they hoped it would make them look better and because there's a good chunk of it that's wanted him gone for years because he doesn't commercialize the football program enough.

Note that while the men Paterno reported the incident too are being proscecuted, Paterno wasn't.

Post by: Desertpuma on January 23, 2012, 02:08:00 PM
I knew Paterno had reported it and did his due diligence. Truth be told, he should have retired about a decade ago. But the public scrutiny and, the fact that it was not widely reported unless you dug for it, that Joe did report to the correct people what was going on only to get fired by the board of the university looking for a cover up. In my opinion, the broken heart, of being thrown under the bus after approximately 30+ yrs of service to the school and the community, is what killed him more than anything.

Personally, I don't think Joe (or Penn State for that matter) did enough. From an outsider looking in, it appeared to me that he and the administration were more concerned with the football program than those boys who were allegedly harmed.

Paterno and Penn State has become the poster child of everything that's wrong with top tier college athletics.

(http://www.washingtonpost.com/entertainment/movies/ben-gazzara-film-and-tv-actor-dies-at-81/2012/02/04/gIQAqNvPqQ_story.html) Some may remember him best in parts of the country as the villain in Roadhouse but the guy has had a hell of a career. He passed away due to pancreatic cancer and was a contemporary of Newman, McQueen, John Cassaevetes, Robert Vaughn, and was even in the Big Lebowski.

Samuel Youd, aka John Christopher (1922 – 2012), died last night in Bath, England, at the age of 89.

As John Christopher he wrote the classic catastrophe novel The Death of Grass (UK 1956), published in the US as No Blade of Grass (1957), and later the popular YA trilogy The Tripods, beginning with The White Mountains (1967).

He also wrote under his own name and several other pseudonyms, as listed in his Wikipedia article.

This one hurts. Christopher (as I grew up referring to him, and still refer to him) was one of the most formative influences in my creative development.  The Tripods Trilogy remains one of my favorite novel series today, above many of the classics held up in our circles as incomparable.

Tonight I am wounded, as is the world. :(

Astronaut Janice Voss, a veteran of five spaceflights and a former science director for a NASA exoplanet-hunting spacecraft, has died after a battle with cancer. She was 55.

“Just got the very sad news that U.S. astronaut Janice Voss passed away last night,” the Association of Space Explorers, an international organization representing more than 350 individuals who have flown in space, wrote on Facebook. “Our thoughts go out to her family and friends.”

NASA confirmed Voss’ death in a statement issued on Tuesday (Feb. 7), saying she had passed away overnight.

I did. Every single strip. I wish they'd go back and collect those in a book, actually. They'd have at least one guaranteed sale right here - even with the inferior alien designs of the novels (the TV series did a much better job on that front).

For those of you don't know, Ralph McQuarrie is single handedly why Star Wars was cool. He's the reason we got Stormtroopers and Darth Vader and Boba Fett. He was one of the greatest concept artists of our time, and his absence from this world will make it a less awesome place.

We all have our sources of inspiration as we write (or draw). Sometimes this muse is populated by the women (or men) in our lives.

Dan DeCarlo's muse, his wife Josie DeCarlo, passed away this past week. Dan died back in 2001, but Josie served as his inspiration for the comic "She's Josie" and later on... "Josie and the Pussycats".

Professor MAR Barker has passed away peacefully, with his wife of 53 years at his side. He was aged 83. More details can be found here

http://www.tekumelfoundation.org/PressRelease-MARBARKER-1929-2012.pdf

Professor Barker was the creator of the world of Tekumel, which was first released to the gaming public in a gloriously illustrated box set edition, called Empire of the Petal Throne, in 1976. The world has a small, but dedicated fanbase. The game has had a troubled history, with several editions being released over the years, the most recent being the last release Games of Order did before the company folded.

Maurice Sendak, the wildly talented, often cantankerous children’s book author and illustrator of Where The Wild Things Are, has died. He was 83 years old.

“I refuse to lie to children,” Sendak told The Guardian in an interview last year. “I refuse to cater to the bullshit of innocence.”

I'd not conceived of cantankerous as a virtue before, but Sendak did a lot to validate the concept.

Let the man rest, he might not have been a a good man by any stretch of the word.. but sentiment like that just perpetuates violence and hatred.

I have been listening to his music since before I knew what music was.

Blind since before the age of one year, he has been a staple of my musical library for more than forty years.

Rest well Doc.

Good-bye Mr. Bradbury.

“And when he died, I suddenly realized I wasn’t crying for him at all, but for the things he did. ...  He shaped the world. He did things to the world. The world was bankrupted of ten million fine actions the night he passed on.”  - Ray Bradbury

We lose another literary giant. I cannot even begin to fathom how much his work and his words have impacted my imagination.

I met Ray Bradbury once - up near Wiscasset.

I will miss him and his stories - he continued writing, with his last article published just a week before his death.

The Hallowe'en Tree, Homecoming, Something Wicked This Way Comes, I Sing the Body Electric, they all helped give my mind the shape that it holds today.

Rest in Peace Mr. Bradbury. You will be remembered long after you have come to dust.

You probably don't recognize the name, but you will recognize his work. He and his design firm are responsible for the design work for most Ferrari sports cars along with dozens of other sporty, concept, and mundane cars. Including the Ferrari 250GT California, the Testarosa, and the Enzo.

His firm also designed the cabinets for those funky (and awesome) touch screen Coke soda fountains.

The official reason for his death has not been determined yet, even according to the police report. Did he have prescription bottles in his room? Yes. ... Could he have had a condition necessitating them but not get to them in time? Certainly ... It is not like it was Lindsay Lohan or anyone with a history of drug problems. Until we know for certain, I'm reserving my judgment.

Profiles of those murdered at the Oak Creek Gurdwara

Satwant Singh Kaleka (65 years old) died defending the temple he built, attempting to fend off a gunman who attacked worshippers Sunday, family members said. Kaleka came to the United States with $100 in his pocket and worked tirelessly to give back to others and build a vibrant Sikh community in the south of the city.

Paramjit Kaur (41 years old) was the mother of two sons, ages 18 and 20. She was a weekly presence at the temple. She came to pray and to prepare food every Sunday for the shared meal.

Suveg Singh (84 years old) held a key role at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin. He provided fellowship. He would ask cabdrivers about their families or offer an uplifting scripture passage. Suveg Singh, who lived with his family, was known to come to the temple early in the morning and stay through the evening, sometimes as late as 7 p.m.

Prakash Singh (39 years old) had reunited with his family just 45 days ago. A priest at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin for about six years, Prakash Singh had gone to India in June, returning with his wife, 11-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter.

Ranjit Singh (49 years old). Ranjit Singh’s son was seven months old when Singh left his home in Delhi, India, and came to the United States, according to report by NDTV, a New Delhi-based media company. The boy, Gurvinder, hoped to see his father for the first time in 16 years when Singh returned to Delhi in November to celebrate the Indian holiday of Diwali, the station reported.

Sita Singh (41 years old). Priest Sita Singh moved here from New York City about six months ago to serve the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin while another priest was gone. He was shot and killed along with his older brother, Ranjit Singh.

This.
Most of these people, authors and actors and playwrights I've never heard of nor would have been interested in.
But this, this man.
He was a hero.
He was courageous, decent, and good.
We're less for his loss, but forever inspired by his life.

Quote from:  Neil Armstrong
"I am, and ever will be, a white socks, pocket protector, nerdy engineer," he said in 2000 in one of his rare public appearances. "And I take a substantial amount of pride in the accomplishments of my profession."

He boldly went where no man had gone before.

Good night Mr. Armstrong.
Let the sweet fresh breezes heal me
As they rove around the girth
Of our lovely mother planet
Of the cool, green hills of Earth.

We rot in the moulds of Venus,
We retch at her tainted breath.
Foul are her flooded jungles,
Crawling with unclean death.

We've tried each spinning space mote
And reckoned its true worth:
Take us back again to the homes of men
On the cool, green hills of Earth.

The arching sky is calling
Spacemen back to their trade.
ALL HANDS!  STAND BY!  FREE FALLING!
And the lights below us fade.

Out ride the sons of Terra,
Far drives the thundering jet,
Up leaps a race of Earthmen,
Out, far, and onward yet ---

We pray for one last landing
On the globe that gave us birth;
Let us rest our eyes on the friendly skies
And the cool, green hills of Earth....

The Auld Grump

One of my co-workers passed around the speech Nixon had written in the 60's, and now it is extra accurate:

He will be mourned by his families and friends; he will be mourned by his nation; he will be mourned by the people of the world; he will be mourned by a Mother Earth that dared send one of her sons into the unknown.

In their exploration, they stirred the people of the world to feel as one; in his death, he binds more tightly the brotherhood of man.

In ancient days, men looked at stars and saw their heroes in the constellations. In modern times, we do much the same, but our heroes are epic men of flesh and blood.

Others will follow, and surely find their way home. Man’s search will not be denied. But he was the first, and he will remain the foremost in our hearts.

For every human being who looks up at the moon in the nights to come will know that there is some corner of another world that is forever mankind.

-Nixon's speech, had Armstrong not returned.

This is a terrible loss for all B5 fans and everyone involved with the show wishes to convey their condolences to the O’Hare family. He was an amazing man.

Ol' West Virginia boy, high school dropout, Normandy paratrooper, Korea and Vietnam veteran, three-time Combat Infantryman Badge recipient, and consummate badass Command Sergeant Major Basil Plumley (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Basil_L._Plumley). Onward, noble soldier. Onward.

How badass was he? So badass that only Sam Elliott could play him in a movie. That's badass. And those who knew him say Sam Elliott (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZBbQm1avEY&feature=related) actually underplayed (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WArAyjr8dRA&feature=fvwrel) Plumley in We Were Soldiers, which gives me pause.

He also held the distinction of bring the longest-serving host of a television show, after hosting The Sky At Night for 50 years.

Oh, and appeared in a recent episode of Doctor Who (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSstjPA_o20), too.

I based a campaign on Gerry Anderson's UFO, using the Spycraft 2.0 rules, once upon a time. When I played X-Com my starting base would invariably be named S.H.A.D.O..

I have always been surprised that there is no Space: 1999 RPG.
