Well, there's no spam yet, but I can't imagine our newest member ChristmasNintendoWiiSale (http://www.crafty-games.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=4778) is here to discuss its latest campaign.

What if it is part of his campaign where his players are valiantly defending the Kingdom of Wii from its militaristic neighbors Playstationistan and Eksboxia?

Real spam this time, by this user:

One post in the "Adventure Companion in PDF" forum, but I notice it has 2 posts, so there's probably a turd somewhere else.

We have captcha running - have for over a year and a half. It just isn't very good, and it doesn't stop people who want to spam from manually filling it out.
Title: Re: Spam... it's what's for dinner
Post by: MilitiaJim on December 18, 2010, 09:43:18 AM
My opinion is that the captcha is good enough to keep our spam level low.  If it gets worse we can re-evaluate.

Actually posting spammers are pretty rare.

But there are quite a lot of new members that are spammers, judging from the sites they post in their profiles. They just never post anything.

One thing determined spammer do is create "captcha call centers", where the software loads a page, and a person reads the captcha and enters a solution. Lather rinse repeat. Some of these even rely on unsuspecting dupes to solve captchas for them.

Is this an attempt at SEO madness, perhaps? There doesn't need to be a post, as long as there's a link somewhere to be crawled by Google, right?

What I want to know is how the ones who do post choose what thread to post in?  I log on in the morning, click "Show unread posts since last visit" and see a thread that is long dead have a totally pointless response from a spammer who will never post again.  It's like they randomly select how out of date they should post - "hmmm, page 17 sounds good".

Ooh, and yet another (http://www.crafty-games.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=5520) -- and this one's even given itself a user-image

And here's the trifecta (http://www.crafty-games.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=5521)

Of 5082 total members, 701 have posted anything at all.  Of the 4381 that haven't posted, about 3000 have personal websites along the vein of "cheap X product".  Pretty significant division.  On the upsite, at least the spammers don't usually post.

(What a productive use of my time ;))

I am currently trying to figure out how to restrict HMTL in forum signatures. I know that will impact some of our folks, but honestly sig spam is the main reason spammers are hitting this board now.

I am currently trying to figure out how to restrict HMTL in forum signatures.

When it really comes down to it, there's little need for URL's in sigs. If you've got a website, there is a separate section of the profile that will hold the link. Not as easy to see, maybe, but it's a minor loss in the war against spammers.

With a name like that, they're almost certain to. I think the only ones who can get away with not posting are the ones with female usernames. They're banking on the hordes of guys here checking out their profiles then clicking on the links.

Sure, it's a stereotype for male gamers, but I'm guessing there are enough people out there falling for it that it's seen as an effective tactic. After all, someone's got to be replying to the Nigerian mail scams or they would have stopped years ago.

Reynaaly22 and his "cheap health insurance ca" signature are showing a definite pattern - not only are you getting spamed with malicious and successful membership applications, they're probably all being done by the same advertisement service provider who has logged all of the CAPTCHA options (jpg name/correct entry) associated with this site and and is pulsing new false id's in here on a clockwork automated schedule.

Generally, it's better to report spam directly (http://www.crafty-games.com/contact). That immediately emails Alex and I, whereas we might not be on the forums when a problem user or post crops up.

Aplusmobi (http://www.crafty-games.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11468) should be nipped in the bud before he/she/it can strike.

I wonder, if you put a clause in the EULA specifying these spammers owe you money -- say $100 -- for every ad they post, could you send them a legally enforcible demand for payment of a nominated value?

Not sure if everyone's seen this update from Alex yet...

Quote from: Crafty_Alex
Hey all,

In an effort to curb some of the spam we've seen to date, I've been upgrading the forum today. Virtually nothing will have changed for the various honest dealers here on the forum, but we are in the process of declawing spammers so that means you'll notice some tweaks in these areas:

* Improved security - We made a jump of several releases today so hopefully we'll have better security measures.

* Stronger CAPTCHA/Anti-Bot - I'm still shopping for the new mod here, but expect it to be slightly harder to register for the boards.

* No HTML in signatures - The biggest change is all links and images in sigs have been deactivated. If you have one currently, good on ya - you can keep it. But if you change it or edit your signature, these will be removed. Sticking to text is good for everyone.

Thanks for your patience!

Just for the record, what is the best way to report spam?  I've been using the "report to moderator"  button, but if you see it here first, I'll stop double pestering you.

[EDIT] Bill ninjas everyone with the answer.  Thank you.

For future reference, when reporting spam is it better to use this thread or the Report to Moderator option?

Generally, it's better to report spam directly (http://www.crafty-games.com/contact). That immediately emails Alex and I, whereas we might not be on the forums when a problem user or post crops up.

- P

I had asked about this before (see above).  I've never felt that normal spam was something they needed to drop whatever they were doing to come deal with it, so I don't email them directly about.  I post it here so they can deal with it whenever they get on the forums again and it lets others can see it has already been reported.  I have opened this thread quite a few times and seen someone has already reported spam so I just went back to my normal business.

Thanks for the consideration. Either avenue works fine. :)

uggxxxcc has been shitting up the wiki, while bodystuds has made one spam-page and I believe he's vandalized an existing page. (http://www.crafty-games.com/node/196)

It's not that I don't like spam, but I can think of many things I'd rather eat at Thanksgiving dinner instead.

Um, unless it's you guys doing something, we may have spam incoming -- I notice that the number of forum members has jumped by over 3000 in about 10 minutes (and was probably climbing rapidly a few minutes before I noticed that), and they seem to have along strings of gibberish for names.

Yeah, that's new. Only just saw the first of it today.

Alex is away at GottaCon this weekend and I don't want to muck with the forum settings until he gets back. If anyone knows SMF and has suggestions, please feel free to PM me so I can pass those along.

Really, the most disapointing thing dealing with de-cereberates like leahwaf is that you can't find their employer to let them know they hired a fucking moron who is either providing no benefit or actual negative sales trafic with their gross incompetence in the art of vandalism, I mean, advertising.

The forum should be modified with a questionnaire for registration. The questions should pertain to some RPG/Crafty things most people would know. I implemented this on a board I administered and it worked pretty well. We also had to go to admin approved user registration. It sent you an email with the answers. Only had a couple spammers try it out and it cut out all the spam.

Crafty-peeps, let me know if you need help moderating. I have vast interwebs IT experience, run several of my own sites, and I could help with a) hardening the forums against spammers and b) approving new memberships, removing spam posts and spammers, and various other everyday things.

You have my email, so hit me up, I am glad to help. Spammers ruin the fun. Also, while you focus on making awesome RPG stuffs, myself and other volunteers can make sure the forums stay healthy. Less time hunting spammers = more time creating stuffs. :)

I'm with Trentin here.

Another forum I use has a thing where to sign up you need a Moderator's approval - so when you click the "join forum" button you have to fill out a little form (same as the profile page here), as well as answer a "Why you want to join this forum" section (with a like 200 word limit) and then a Moderator clicks the "Make it so" or "Deny" button based on your answers (so a copy/pasta about shitty handbags or whatever these fucks are vomiting onto the boards won't cut it).  Downside?  It takes a couple hours to join (waiting for approval).  Upside? Said forum hasn't ever had any spammers that I've seen.

Might end the sudden avalanche of bullshit we've had in the last couple days?

We've avoided instituting a Q&A step in user reg to make it as simple to join the forum as possible. We've also brought on extra mods to help remove the spam as quickly and efficiently as we can, and to purge bogus accounts and the like.

Not sayin' we won't take it up a notch - I've got an email out to Alex about this now - and depending on how we move forward we might need the extra help and be more than happy to take you up on your offer, Trent.

Will keep you posted.

Ho-kay folks,

I have updated the forums to be more restrictive both in registering (as Pat has done) and in permissions for low-post-count members (namely, they cannot post new topics, send PMs, view memberlists or otherwise harass real people until they hit 5 posts).

Questionnaires are a good idea if we continue to have problems with spam, but so far the reg email seems to be doing most of the heavy lifting.

Thanks for your offers of help - hopefully we won't need to take you up on them.

A.

A SysAdmin explained this to me the other day and it's frighteningly cunning - they'll post something, somewhere, that is vaguely on topic but just gibberish enough to be ignored by the majority of the posters. Then a few days later, the bot will edit the post, putting in a link for a product or service of some kind. This means that people are less likely to ID it as spam, but when the gCrawler next pops by it goes to the link, thus increasing the hit count and therefore position of said product on a google search.

Pretty clever stuff, actually.

So we're up another 9,000 registered users since last I checked about two months ago I'd guess (doubling the previous count).

That's just mind boggling to me.

You can remove user aaoaonzkgz now and save us the trouble - having oakly sunglasses in their website is not exactly subtle.

Having added another 9,000 users recently, I can't even speculate how you'd go about purging these creeps at a rate even fractionally as fast as they intrude. I don't think the captcha can be called a rousing success - or maybe it is and we'd have 70,000 gibberish usernames in here without it :-\...
